Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone is aware of this, but there is a video on Youtube showing how to clean and maintain the ADF on a Officejet Pro L7xxx series. It has been very helpful as it covers almost all of the inportant aspects to getting the ADF to function properly.

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

Hi Dexter,

Thanks for this. I, for one, was not aware so I appreciate it.

Your saying at the bottom "nothing lasts forever...." made me smile... While it is true, when we purchase something in September, '08, it seems reasonable it should last longer than 3/09 without breaking down, esp. if it hasn't been abused, which mine certainly wasn't.

I know that saying was probably a personal one for you, but because you ARE an HP employee, and some of us are not exactly thrilled with the craftmanship of the L7780 so far, a different saying might be better appreciated.  :smileyhappy:   Hope you took this in the right spirit.  thanks for trying to help.  patricia

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

:smileyvery-happy: that saying is meant to be a general saying, and not specific to the printer. I agree that the Pro L7xxx series have a pretty bad ADF and printhead craftmanship, or at least when it comes to their reliability and proper functioning. Hopefully their upgrades, the OJ Pro 8500 series are a step up!

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

Thanks for the You Tube link.

I am very disappointed with the L7780.
I am a HP Business partner as well as a Master Accredited Systems Engineer in Servers with Hp. But I do not work for HP.

I am a consultant just trying to make my clients happy. Get called everytime this ADF fails really stinks because I can not charge for it. They like all the other features.

It's just frustrating.

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

I understand your frustration Susan. But i suggest you keep a copy of this video with you and show it to your customers to get the ADF working as best as possible. Like i said before, This video singlehandedly has resolved the ADF feed and paper jam issue many times for me and my co-workers. You could probably circulate it with your co-workers also and see what the success rate is.

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

I have a L7680 that had trouble with ADF at first but is working now. My problem is I can't scan to computer, I get text saying the computer and printer are

not connected. All the other functions seem OK. I can print from computer and load photo from printer to computer. Any ideas? How do I get the U Tube clip on the PDF?

Thanks, Wayne

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

Same problem with the replacement printer..this is the second time this has happened

I ended up having problems with the replacement printer that HP sent.  I was told by their rep it was a "hardware" problem...another paper jam in the ADF...very very frustrating.  It didn't take hours on the phone this time...only an hour and they sent another replacement in one day so that was good...

But, if I ever get another printer, which it certainly looks like is inevitable, it will not be an HP and I will buy local, so if there is a problem, I can take it there and get a replacement immediately.  Hopefully, it will be a good product and last more than six months.

Wayne

Can you copy documents?  The copy function just takes out the communication with the PC.

Can you see the scanner function on your PC?  did you install the Software?  If the driver does not exist on the PC for the scanner then PC and the Scanner will not communicate.

Re: L7780 Automatic Document Feeder not up to par

Welcome to HP's 'upper end' printers: I have the previous model (7780) and exact same issue. Unfortunately for me, I was only using mine for printer for the first year and when I finally needed the adf for the first time...it didn't work, just like yours.  I've also had issue re: ink consumption (high) and losing wireless connection...same complaints as other 7780/8500's.

Bad design, poor/no QA and they pretty much just changed the model# without fixing the issue. When I called HP, they offered to replace mine with an 8500 'for a reduced price': I saw just as many bad comments as my 7780 after I placed the order AND I also found out that the HP guy I ordered the replacement from lied to me (I SPECIFICALLY asked if they were providing a NEW unit and he said they were; when I received my order confirmation, I reviewed the details of the order and it said it was a REFURB).    I called them back to complain re: refurb and they offered to send new one...for a 'higher, but still reduced price'. I said that was baiting/switching and then they offered to provide a new model for the original price. I asked if the problems I had already mentioned had been resolved: they couldn't/wouldn't answer that question...

Ongoing nonsense...I cancelled the order.  If you can, return yours...

BTW: HP will try to get you to follow their ADF repair document:

1) will tell you to reseat the rollers

2) will tell you to clean the rollers

NONE of these steps work. It's a design flaw and it wasnt fixed on at least a couple of models of their printers (7780, 8500...and perhaps others)

1) Fiddling with the roller position MIGHT get you using the ADF for a few pages but without touching it, it'll stop working again.

2) how does cleaning the rollers have anything to do with a roller assembly that does not drop down to even TOUCH the paper?!? Roller slippage only comes in to play if the paper/rollers are actually making contact: this is NOT a MIS-FEED issue, it is a NON-FEED issue.

Bad design, bad product. Ironically, a Office supply chain store was blowing out 8500's @ $200CDN, LESS THAN 1/2 price. I wonder why(!)
