Laserjet M1271nfw fax phone book numbers problem

We're a small office that has a  Windows-based Laserjet M1271nfw. We can manually send and receive faxes, but the preset numbers in our fax phone book do not work.  We've entered the 9 in the machine to access an outside line. We've preset our numbers with a 1, the area code and the number.  Do we need dashes or spaces when presetting our fax phone book numbers? What else could we be doing wrong?
