I have an officejet 8500 A909a that will copy and print; however, it will not scan. I have tried multiple reinstallations with version 13, 14 and enterprise of the full software and both fail when trying to connect the printer with either a network or USB connection. I have googled multiple solutions and tried them all. The hardware diagnostic checks out fine. The scan diagnostic shows no device connected.
During installation of all versions of the software it gets to 6 of 8, hangs, says it did not connect and has options to set up later.. Tried to set up later and it gets to the connection screen and in trying to set up with USB, it hangs and does nothing. and will not connect.
I have installed and reinstalled versions (13, 14, basic, Enterprise,) The last time I installed version 13 and 14, after uninstalling and cleaning remnants, I received a fatal error and it gave me a solution to install HP B210 Photosmart Software (HUH?) I Tried that supposed HP SOLUTION and that was a RIDICULOUS waste of time. The software had the same problem as version 13, 14 of going to the USB screen and just sitting there with no options of canceling but with the option to go back.
the last time I installed the Enterprise version, I received the following error message:
+0000000000005915828{s}Now launching=X:\hpzmsi01exe - list daimler_enterprise_product -commit "/*" "X:\hpwins22.dat" "-*Stub" "157416" "/rerun" "1" "1" -1XXX -f "X:\hpwins22.dat" -Validate Not at" -Validate No Error message received Found a newer version of the same software on this machine. Quitting. X:\bpd__scan_ent.msi failed with the return code 1603 MSIInstall()failed with1603 for MSI BPD_Scan_Ent Exit Code=1603
While this post is awaiting an answer, I will uninstall all HP Software. I hope someone can walk me through this issue. This has been a fairly reliable printer to this point; however, this problem is making me reconsider my loyalty to HP printers. I have a Photosmart 7350 that never gives me any problems. What happened to that kind of quality?

Hi arrzrbck,
You mention that the printer will print and copy but not scan, but that the installation software doesn't finish. Are you referring specifically to the scanning drivers available through our website?
Microsoft natively provides a basic driver for scanner support and there may be a conflict.
If you could look at this article:
Specifically under the Windows 7 section, can you check if any of those options are available to you?
Hope this helps.

No amount of installs and diagnostics have worked and I decide to start from scratch
I uninstall all HP Software through Programs. This requires 5 Reboots. Why? BLOATWARE! Software that I did not want and do not use.
I remove all HP Officejet 8500 Pro Series printers and faxes from Devices and Printers.
Put in Install CD to access uninstall features
Navigate to ccc and find the following:
Uninstall - > Run -> Reboot
Uninstall_l1 - > Run -> Reboot
Uninstall_l2 - > Run -> Reboot
Uninstal_l3 - > Run -> Reboot
Uninstall-l4 - > Run -> Reboot
Decide to install Full Version 13 of the Install Software. WHY? It has worked in the past and I guess I’m a glutton for punishment.
Extracting to Temp folder
Checking system.
Preparing system…
Installing software
Installing Item 1 of 8
Proceeds smoothly until 6 of 8. Detects device… Waiting for device setup to finish……Pauses for a LONG while.
Reminder Window pops up in system tray. Contains the following:
USB Composite Device
Officejet Pro 8500 A909
USB Printing Support
Officejet Pro 8500 A909
USB Mass Storage Device
HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909 Series
HP Officejet Pro 85 USB Device
SUPPOSEDLY, all devices are ready to use.
Next screen 8 of 8 (what no 7 of 8?):
Device setup has failed to complete……….HELP Button SUGGESTIONs are WORTHLESS! ….Click Next
Configuring product.
Software Installation Complete. REALLY? How can it both fail to complete and be complete at the same time?
Fatal Erro during installation. FIGURES but NOT totally UNEXPECTED.
Gathering failure information…..Click Continue……..Search for Solution...............Solution Found: HP Install Error – Windows 7 (NOT AGAIN!) This SUPPOSED SOLUTION requires me download and install Photosmart B210 software. HUH? I have tried that TOTALLY WORTHLESS solution and the result ends in the software ends with not detecting the printer and a fatal error. I am not going down that road AGAIN!
Run the HP SDU
Connectivity – OK
Device Manager – OK
Driver – The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable…. Another window: The path C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\Temp\HPOJ8500vA909_Corporate_64
Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product Scan…….
Scan Driver is missing or corrupt………………..
Windows (WIA) Scan – OK
Solution Center – HP SDU has detected issues (Why is that not surprising?)…… HP has created a software Patch……………….. Download -> Run and following error message: This update does not support any of the HP device drivers that you have on your PC. You do not need this update.. (First I need it and now I don’t? RIDICULOUS!)
HP TWAIN SCAN – The Twain component may be corrupted……FIGURES…….
Registry – OK
HP Scan Flow Manager - Has issues
Digital Imaging Monitor – OK
Front Panel – Issues
Remembered I used an HP Printer Windows 7 Install Wizard. Found it in archived Software and Ran…………… Downloading a 308 MB file (v14 I think) ……Extracting to Temp folder………Install USB…………Finds Printer Basic functionality drivers appear to be installed click Next to install the full HP software for the selected printer…..does its thing…….Fatal error.
Run HP SDU again
HP Twain Scan still missing… What’s this an new ERROR code appears:
4.[(2,0,80040154),(0,0,0),(3,56,0)]
Twain component is not functioning correctly because it is being used by another process…………..try to scan with MSFT Paint……………..
No Scan Flow Manager
No Front Panel scan settings
Turn Printer off and on Recogizes Printer. No Scan Settings. Restart Computer.
Issue still there..Filled out survey number 3 and made my displeasure and frustration known for the third time
I have always been able to print and copy and try to scan with Paint and Window Fax and Scan. I now have some semblance of a scanning solution; however, I purchased this printer because of its capability to scan to PDF and Word; therefore, this problem is still not software. I purchased a Printer and software solution. HP, I am not the only one having this issue. Search your forums and search Google. This issue is PERVASIVE! Why have you not responded? Is it to force someone to buy another printer? If I have to buy another all in one printer to be able to scan to word or PDF, you can bet it will not be an HP and you can kiss my ink subscription GOODBYE!. I have been a loyal HP user since 1997 and have purchased HP products exclusively because of their reliability. This 24 day and counting process has made me question my loyalty to the HP brand.

I had a Samsung HDD that was beginning to deteriorate; therefore I purchased a TOSHIBA HDD and did a complete restoration of Win 7 Professional. Downloaded the HP Windows 7 Printer Install Utility and let it do its thing and now have a fully functional Officejet Pro 8500. Where were the helpful HP engineers and designers, during this experience?
Word of Advice to Officejet Pro 8500 Users:
If you have the bloated HP printer solution Software installed, do NOT try to remove parts of the BLOATED Software your life will be miserable and you will have a crippled printer.
Word of Advice to HP:
Your BLOATED software is unnecessary! At least give me the option to choose what parts of your software to install. As a matter of principle, I refuse to purchase any supplies from companies that insist on installing their bloatware so they can sell me something. I am fully capable of updated my software and purchasing my supplies without your help. HP = Great Hardware - CRAPPY Software = Less than Stellar Experience
