OfficeJet 6500 two-sided copying

I have the duplexer installed and am able to print two-sided documents.  However, I've been unable to copy a two-sided original to create a two-sided copy.  I insert my two-sided original in the Automatic Document Feeder, and select two-sided copy from the printer's Control Panel.  The original feeds through, the front prints, the original does not re-feed to copy the second side, the copy re-feeds as though it is going to print the second side, and the copy completes with the second side blank.  I'm thinking that perhaps this printer only has the ability to create a two-sided copy from two one-sided originals.  I've checked the User Manual, the HP Solution Center help, online help, and even had an unsuccessful online chat with an HP representative about this issue.

Re: OfficeJet 6500 two-sided copying

The Automatic Document Feeder on this printer does not have the capability of scanning both sides of an original document automatically at one go. So the printer can scan 2 original docs(1-sided) and print both of them on the 2 sides of a plain paper.

Thanks so much, Dexter!  It's too bad that the pre-sales information I received, user documentation, online help and/or HP chat technician could not have provided such a succinct answer.

It is a fairly simple query, and tech support SHOULD be able to answer this. It's a pity they weren't able to do it. But you can feel free to post here ANYTIME regarding ANY issue and we'll be here to help you. :smileyhappy:

Re: OfficeJet 6500 two-sided copying

I just tried to make a two-sided copy of a two-sided original, and was disappointed that the printer didn't do it.  I Googled the issue, and expected to find help, and I found your posting.  You probably figured this out already, but just in case, here goes:    I ultimately was able to do it in a cumbersome way (and I made a mistake on my first try).  I copied one side of the two-sided original, with page 1 on top facing up, and then I put those pages face up (facing me) in the paper tray.  I then turned over all the pages in the original (one by one, with page 2 on top), and copied the "even" side of the original to the back side of the copy. I  hope this makes sense.  Thanks.

Re: OfficeJet 6500 two-sided copying

I'm using Paperport Delux 7.0.  I could use the Officejet6500 as a TWAIN scanner.  After pages were scanned and accepted into Paperport, the Paperport software would ask something like "Finished or ScanOtherSide".  I then flipped the pages over and Paperport would scan and interleave the backsides of the document to make a coherent stack of pages in order.

However, after a WinXP update and an HP update, for some reason, the software is no longer asking me this.  So I am now stuck.

Re: OfficeJet 6500 two-sided copying

I'm glad I found this post...  I would like to add that I was able to do two-sided printing by using the scanner, not the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder).  For those who don't know... this is how:

  1. Place document facedown on scanner
  2. Press Copy (the menu button) and choose your preferences... pressing ok to browse through settings and making sure to choose 2-sided printing
  3. Press Start Copy (either black or color)
  4. The printer starts then tells me "Ink drying... please wait..."
  5. The printer tells me to load page two on the scanner and press ok
  6. I flip the page over (on the scanner) then press ok
  7. The printer re-feeds and prints the 2nd side

Wah-la!!!! A two-sided copy!

Re: OfficeJet 6500 two-sided copying

I found this website to be very helpful:

http://www.ehow.com/how_5327575_scan-microsoft-office-document-imaging.html

If you have Microsoft Office, there is a built-in tool called Office Document Imaging that works with your Officejet to perform double-sided scanning.
