I'm using Paperport Delux 7.0. I could use the Officejet6500 as a TWAIN scanner. After pages were scanned and accepted into Paperport, the Paperport software would ask something like "Finished or ScanOtherSide". I then flipped the pages over and Paperport would scan and interleave the backsides of the document to make a coherent stack of pages in order.
However, after a WinXP update and an HP update, for some reason, the software is no longer asking me this. So I am now stuck.

I'm glad I found this post... I would like to add that I was able to do two-sided printing by using the scanner, not the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). For those who don't know... this is how:
- Place document facedown on scanner
- Press Copy (the menu button) and choose your preferences... pressing ok to browse through settings and making sure to choose 2-sided printing
- Press Start Copy (either black or color)
- The printer starts then tells me "Ink drying... please wait..."
- The printer tells me to load page two on the scanner and press ok
- I flip the page over (on the scanner) then press ok
- The printer re-feeds and prints the 2nd side
Wah-la!!!! A two-sided copy!

I found this website to be very helpful:

If you have Microsoft Office, there is a built-in tool called Office Document Imaging that works with your Officejet to perform double-sided scanning.
