Copying works fine, printing works fine, just the scanning stops part way through.

That's just strange. There must be somthing in the software that's causing it to cancel. I want to point you to a scrubber that will completely remove the software, so you can do a fresh install, but I need to know what brand of computer you're using to point you to the right one.

I am a different user.. but have the same problem and I have gone through the same steps you had mentioned below... (I dont have any issue with printing/ copying.. but not a single scan either connecting USB or wireless and my printer is still under warranty but HP website doesnt provide good links with good phone numbers or online access )
I have a windows xp desktop (assembled 4 yrs back but stable enough computer with good memory).. and a windows 7 sony laptop with i5 processor....
Using windows xp with usb cable attached to printer .. and windows 7 laptop connected wirelessly.
This 'scan cancelled' message occurs from my desktop. I could not even get that far wirelessly nor from teh console scan option from the printer.
First let's try to fix the 'scan cancelled' message from my desktp .. Any help appreciated.

I forgot to mention besides just brands of computers, I'll need to know what the exact model of 4500 you have is. Do you have the G510a, the G510g, or the G510n?

The Multifunction Machine is a HP Officejet 4500 Model CB867A. It's not a wireless version.
The computer attached to this machine is a homebult windows 7 running, i5 based machine.
Do you need more information than that? And as the other consumer wrote, I do think that this is an issue beyond just my machine. I went through about 15 other people's requests for help on this and other sites before writing myself. I do appreciate your time, but am concerned for the larger public.
