I bought an HP Officejet 4500 to use partially as a document scanner. Yet, whenver I attempt to scan anything, it stops about 1/3 thorugh the first page and the LCD screen reads "scan cancelled." No matter what scanning software I'm using, it freezes and must be shut down by windows.
I have followed all the instructions, restarted, reset, reinstalled. I have used the scan doctor (it told me that I cancelled the scan when the issue ocurred).
I am running Windows7 x64
This happens about 95% of the time. Randomly, it will scan beautifully.
Please help.

The printer may not be getting enough power. If you have it plugged into a surge protector or power strip, remove it from that and plug it directly into the wall. Let me know what happens.

I have tried it on multiple outlets with and without surge protectors. I have even tried it in two different houses. At this point, I am 99.9999% sure it is not a power issue. I also think that were it a power issue, it would not continue to print well nor to pull the rest of the paper through. It honestly seems to be software or driver related. That being said, I have reinstalled the software and updated to the latest drivers.

Is the printer connected via wireless or USB?

Make sure you're not plugging the printer into a USB 3.0 slot. The 4500 only works over USB 2.0, and USB 3.0 can cause it to act funny.

The printer is plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

If you scan from MS Paint, does it do the same thing?

It does. The same thing ocurrs whether I use the HP scanning program, Irfanview, paint, or microsoft scan wizard. It happens with both TWAIN and WIA drivers.

From what you're discribing, it sounds like the problem is somewhere in the hardware. It looks like the printer itself is cancelling the scan job before it can finish. Does the printer do the same thing when you tell it to copy?
