I recently had to reinstall my Officejet 5780 software. I used the original installation disk and I've since checked if I had the most recent updates and drivers. HP's automatic check says I do.
The fax and printer both function normally when using it manually (at the machine). The printer also functions normally from the printer drop down menu on the computer. The fax however does not appear on the printer drop down menu on the computer. It was listed there for the two previous years I've owned this officejet. The computer did not change and no hardware was added. I use Windows XP Home. I can use the HP Solution Center software and fax manually but I cannot fax from within a program like a word doc or a pdf because the fax does not appear on the printer drop down menu like it used to.
I've tried using the "add a printer" feature in the control panel but it won't let me add a fax machine. I've also used the set-up fax feature in the HP Solution Center to no avail. The test your fax set-up comes up green showing everything is normal. From the machine itself everything is fine and normal the bottom line is that I cannot fax from within a program on the computer. I use this feature a lot (when it's working).
The software was reinstalled because the computer stopped recognizing the fax machine. I do not remember nor see what may have preceded this original problem (i.e. no new software or hardware was installed). This whole problem started two weeks ago. I use a HP computer. Please help. Thank-you.

It would be interesting to find out you resolved this Fax issue as I have the same problem with my HP Officejet Pro 7780 which I re-installed.Fax works fine at the printer itself however the software was not fully installed as the Fax does not appear within the "Printers & Faxes" in control panel.I've searched and tried lots of stuf and still the same

I'm having the exact same prob on IMac. Did all the installs of most current software. Same issue.. fax on print menu not usable, fax from machine great. Fax setup from IMac great.. Interesting to note this has always been this way even when I was on Windows/XP.

Hey, after spending a very considerable # of hours and posts to all kinds off forums, the only thing left was to re-image my machine as it had something to do with having removed some reg keys, so I had to bring it back to its original purchased state with the help of Dell support(I have a Dell Inspiron 9400).Several of my other problems disappeared also and now my printer(AIO OfficeJetPro 7780)works fine.The problem began when I neede to re-install the printer.I know this is a shame to resolve this way but I had spent 2 weeks trying everything in HP,Dell, (forums)supports and I needed the d---- thing to work.

I had the option on Offcie 2003 but was upgraded to Office 2007. Since then the drop down disappeared. Wow what a step backwards in a green environment where we are to save trees. It would be nice to FAX without printing first. I've removed the printer several times, reloaded the software AND all available updates but to no avail
