Scanjet 3500c getting 'An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. ',

But the device is connected, and it will scan to print to m Photosmart 8250. Just won't 'Scan Document'.

I tried reinstalling the 3500 software from the disk, but I get a 'Can't load classes - Catestrophic error ' .

Anyone have any clues?
