Scanjet 5470c light/scan bar sticks

I turned on my HP5470c and heard the usual start up sounds.  When I attempted to scan, the light/scan bar did not want to retract to the standby position.  I heard some grinding noise.  The lock is not on.  I uplugged and replugged and the light bar  tries to return to the standby position.  Any clues to what's going on?  Thanks for any tips that you can provide me.
