Scanner Unreachable - HP Officejet Pro 8600

[ Edited ]

My problem is intermittent. Sometimes it will work and most times it will not.

It seems to work fine with other PC's connected to my network (Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7).
The PC that is having this problem is an HP desktop (Win XP) connected via Ethernet to the router. The Officejet Pro 8600 is also wired to the router.
When it does not work I get these types of error messages:
  • Scan to computer is no longer activated - The network connection...
  • Invalid Scan Shortcut - The HP scan application does not contain a shortcut corresponding to your selection...
  • Scanner Unreachable - Scanner communication cannot be established...
  • Scan to Computer is currently unavaillble - You won't be able to start a scan from the printer. - Cannot connect to the printer. Continuing to try to connect tothe printer. If the problem persists, ensure that your product is powered on and is connected to your network.

I have installed and uninstalled the HP all-in-one software 8 - 10 times. I have used the software on the CD and from HP.com (driver downloads), the version number is the same.
Most mornings the HP Desktop is not visible on the touch display of the All-in-one under Scan | Computer | Select Computer. (others are listed there but not this problem desktop.

I have spoke with HP technical support on the phone at least 6 times. All they do is have me uninstall and reinstall the software and when it does not fix the problem, advise me to speak with my PC manufacturer which is also HP, but being XP has been out of softwre support warranty for many years.

Re: Scanner Unreachable - HP Officejet Pro 8600

Thank you for the information. I have revied the documentation and run the Scan utility.

The scan utility runs without errors when everything is working between the scanner and the PC and no scanner unreachable etc. errors are poping up.

The scan utility fails the HP Twain Scan test when the errors that say the PC is unable to communicate with the printer etc are present as an icon in the systray.

I have Hibernate and systems standby turned off.

I assume I have a good network connection as all the other PC's connect and operate fine between the PC and the All in One on my network.

Re: Scanner Unreachable - HP Officejet Pro 8600

Hi darrensweeney,

What happens if you install the printer using the USB connection?

May want to check to see if the WIA services are working correctly.

Follow the steps below to check the WIA Service:

1. Type services.msc in run or search program and files

2. Scroll down to the WIA Windows Image Acquisition

3. Make sure that this service is running. Click Stop, and then Restart to make sure

4. Restart the computer

Restart the Dependencies services:

1. Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.

2. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

3. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.

4. 2 services should be listed.

5. Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

6. Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.

7. Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.

8. Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.

9. You should be able to Start the service by hitting Start.

10. Now you are done and the Twain Manager should be working and not give you an error.

Check dependencies or sub dependencies:

Right click on WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) selecting first properties and then the dependencies tab. It should list: Remote Procedure Call RPC  and  Shell Harward Detection

Under RPC it will then list DCOM Service Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper Go back to the main services.msc list and then right click and start all the items listed as dependencies or sub dependencies under WIA

Re: Scanner Unreachable - HP Officejet Pro 8600

Thanks for your help. I am working through this.

I am doing as you say for Restart the Dependencies services, however when I type "sevices" in the search box, I get a lot of choices, none of which are Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

Can you elaborate on this?

Re: Scanner Unreachable - HP Officejet Pro 8600

Here are my results (in Red)

Follow the steps below to check the WIA Service:

1. Type services.msc in run or search program and files

2. Scroll down to the WIA Windows Image Acquisition

3. Make sure that this service is running. Click Stop, and then Restart to make sure

4. Restart the computer

Done as instructed.

Restart the Dependencies services:

1. Click on Run, in box type “services.msc” without quotes.

2. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).

3. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.

4. 2 services should be listed. Only have two services listed. Shell Hardware Detection is not there.

Did this. Had to press Stop before I could press Start.

10. Now you are done and the Twain Manager should be working and not give you an error.

Check dependencies or sub dependencies:

Right click on WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) selecting first properties and then the dependencies tab. It should list: Remote Procedure Call RPC  and  Shell Harward Detection This one is missing

Under RPC it will then list DCOM Service Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper Go back to the main services.msc list and then right click and start all the items listed as dependencies or sub dependencies under WIA

Not sure if my answers give you any more to go on. I can tell you this. I did not try to connect with a USB cable. I have no trouble using the scanner with 2 other PC's connected on my network to this device. One is WinXP the other is WinVista.
