Problem: (1) Unable to update front panel “Scan To” and “START SCAN” buttons on the front control panel from the HP Solutions Center Scan button software. “Update the Device” button fails.
(2) Unable to scan directly from the printer without using a PC to control the scanning process because there are no Scan Shortcuts loaded to the printer.
Hardware: HP OfficeJet J6480 printer, static IP address 192.168.0.80
Network: Infrastructure mode, with Windows Small Business ServerPrinter connected to wireless access point D-Link DWL-2100AP with static IP address: 192.168.0.50, SSID: styx, WPA enabled
D-Link Router 192.168.0.1 also operating as DHCP server
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
Client PC’s operating with dynamic IP addresses in range from 192.168.0.102 to 192.168.0.150
Subnet mask for all devices is 255.255.255.0
Software / drivers used for installation: OJJ6400_Full_10.exe, (1/1 , 255.38M)
Released 2008-07-28, Version 10.0.1
What works: The J6480 printer was configured manually and is connected by an 802.11g wireless link to a network containing a mix of wired and wireless desktop and laptop client PC’s running Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Business. All PC’s and the server recognize the J6480 printer on the network and are able to print to it. The printer is assigned a static IP address on the network of 192.168.0.80. All PC’s on the network are able to fax and receive fax documents. All PC’s on the network are able to scan documents on the J6480 using the scan button and shortcuts provided in the HP Solutions Center software
The full version of the HP Solution Center software is installed on every PC. The J6480 printer is able to copy and fax documents directly from the printer using the front panel controls without having to access a PC.
When a user attempts to scan a document from the printer front panel by pressing the “Scan To” or “START SCAN” button the user is prompted to select a computer. All available PC’s appear on the LCD panel. When the user selects a PC, the PC receives an alert stating “Error: LCD List needs to be upgraded”. When following the solution guide for this error, the user is able to access the scan to setup and select available shortcuts, however when the user clicks on the “Update the Device” button, the selection disappears and the update is not applied to the printer. There appears to be no way to successfully load scan shortcuts to the physical printer, therefore the user cannot scan from the printer.
Solved! Go to Solution.

I too am having this problem. I run Windows XP as well, with a newly bought HP J6480.
It started right after I installed Turbotax on my computer

Hello, I was having the same problem and I read this string and I thought all hope was lost. I read the instructions on the link below and I really didn't think it would work. But it surprisingly did. I uninstalled the program and downloaded the full version from the J6480 support page, as well as, the firmware update. Prior to reinstalling I ran the scrubber that is also on the J6480 support page, though I don't think it ran/worked. For some reason the install took a few attempts to get it right, but after it was done I updated my Scan To options. When I clicked Update Device the window closed on it's own, which I didn't remember it doing before. I placed a page on the doc feeder and Solution Center opened. When I hit Scan To my option, I only selected one, came up on the LCD. I scaned and it worked OK. I have a HP Pavillion Elite m9520f PC. Hope this helps.

I am the original poster in this thread.
I was able to solve the problem and update the J6480 Front Panel scan settings after installing two critical updates located in the J6480 drivers and downloads section of the HP support site. They are dated 3-2009 and 4-2009 and are 1.53Mb and 25.29 Mb and are located here:
and
After installing these, the HP Solution Center updated the J6480 allowing use of the Start Scan button.

This solution does not work! I try to install the 3-2009 patch and get a dialog saying, "This update does not support any of the HP device drivers that you have on your PC. You do not need this software update."
The link for the 4-2009 patch goes to a page with nothing to download!
I have had this issue come up multiple times. The only way I have been able to resolve it is to run the tool to remove the previous install and then re-install everything. This is an acceptable solution about 0 times, and a solution I can grudgingly accept about once. I'm on to time 4 or 5 at this point. It is something I have to do every month and a half or so. In my book, that makes this printer, which other wise scans and prints beautifully, a piece of junk!
A quick search of the web for the string "hp j6480 lcd list needs to be upgraded" brings up over 13,000 results.
HP needs to solve this problem. The next time I need to uninstall my HP drivers in order to make it work, I will not be re-installing HP drivers. Instead I will be installing drivers for Cannon, Samsung, Epson, etc...

The following just worked and was slightly less painful than re-installing:
- power cycle the device
- go into Manage Shortcuts and delete a custom shortcut that is already in the Scan To... Settings
- go into Scan To... Settings, you will get a message that a shortcut is missing, click OK and Update
- go back to Manage Shortcutsand recreate the custom shortcut (are you having fun yet?)
- go back to Scan To... Settings and add the custome shortcut and update
- jump down, turn around, pick a bale of cotton
The fact that this worked should in no way be taken by HP as meaning it is acceptable. For such basic functionality to fail simply as a result of installing some other application, an application that isn't even from HP and should in no way effect the printer/scanner, is 100% unacceptable. In better financial times I wouldn't have wasted this much time trying to fix such a problematic piece of equipment, and even in these times, this device has reached the threshold where the cost of manpower to maintain it has exceeded the cost of replacement.

Hi guys,
I had this problem with the j4680. Everything I came across would say move items from left to right in the Scan to Setup panels. I would never have anything in the left panel to move! But I powered off the printer and unplugged it. Turned it back on, tried to scan something, got you have no scanner options on the LCD panel.
I opened up HP Solution, Front Panel Scan settings, again, nothing in the left side, everything was listed on the right. So on a whim, I created shortcuts, shortcuts ended up in the left hand side of the panel. I moved them to the right updated, and closed HP solutions. Scanning from printer still wouldn't work, so on a whim I reopened HP solutions and moved the shortcuts I had created from the right panel to the left. So basically the left side had the shortcuts I created and the right had the original list and then it worked.
Don't know why but maybe this will help someone.

I can't understand all that. All I know is I have a pic on my glass screen and I can't scan it. My question is this. Can you scan wirelessly? I threw away the cable connection since this is a wireless printer.
