My advice to you is to get rid of it. I have purchase this scanner model back in Nov 2005 for 430$CAD and have been swearing at it ever since. Paper jams from the ADF. driver issues under XP, Vista and now Win7 (App freeze). All in all, I have nothing but regrets for purchasing this scanner. I would have gotten a cheap flatbed and it would have done the job since the ADF keeps jaming. Get a refund or resell it now!!!
We also have one at my work place and guess what, the tray for the ADF isn't there. Gee, I wonder why...

Loading the full feature software & Driver for Windows 7 and the HP Scanjet 5590 did not work. I tried a couple of times, uninstalling everything in between each time. There were no icons on my desktop to run the software as with the HP DIRECTOR. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a new HP Pavillion Laptop LV698PA. I first started by loading the software from the original CD but when I clicked on the HP DIRECTOR Icon I was informed there were compatibility issues. After many hours I am back at square one. My scanjet has worked well for many years so how do I get it to work with my new computer and Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) ??

Hi Lyn, I also had the same experience that the fix above did not work for me (I am running a Dell Studio laptop).
I have just spent 6 hours on a live chat with HP, and eventually we got an alternative fix. Apparently, some computers will not load the new software cleanly due to local security settings. What we had to do was this:
i) Download Install the original version 9.0 of the software here:
ii) Installed the TWAIN driver from here:
iii) Once that has been installed. Then reinstall the latest version over the older version. The latest version for your system can be found here:
This got my scanner working (finally!)

The latest version of the software on hp's website seems to load OK. My current problem is the duplex feeder does not work. I got one replacement under warranty from hp and that worked for about 4 months before it started jamming when feeding the reverse side. Now the feeder jams continuously!
I am currently looking for a reasonably priced replacement. I fail to understand how hp can develop a duplex feeder for 2 sided copying on my laserjet, but can not transfer that design to reasonably priced scanner. The printer feeder has not jammed once since purchased.

I have the same problem getting the administrator question even logging in with the Administrator ?? Did sombody got a solution?
First installing an older version also gives problems - not possible to install because operation system is not supported ??
