I have a black line that runs from top to bottom of ever page when I get a fax, or when I send a fax we've been told that the receiving party has a black line on the copy they receive.

I'd start with a hard reset. You need to have the printer on. Pull the power supply from the back of the printer and then from the wall. Wait 20-30 seconds and plug it back into the wall, not a strip. Then plug it into the printer. It should power up on its own. You can send a test fax to 1-888-473-2963. I won't be able to tell if the one you send has lines through it, but the service will send you a fax back and you can check it.
As far as the lines on the faxes you send, sounds like you need to clean the glass and the scanner lid backing with mild window cleaner sprayed on a cloth. Pay really close attention to the outside edges of the glass because the least bit of dust or lint can cause lines. I don't know what kind of printer you have, but if you have one that has a document feeder, you also need to clean that narrow strip of glass under the feeder and the rollers in the feeder. A quick test to see if issue is resolved is to run a blank copy.
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!
