letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

laserjet 3880. a couple of months ago, it started enlarging scans: scanning a letter size document results in a page about 35 in x 45 in (approx). tried changing resolution from my prefered "200dpi - grayscale - letter size" to other dpi's - ie if changed to 75 dpi the result is a page 23 x 30 in approx. both scan settings and toolbox are set to letter size. searches in this forum and google had come out empty. the file size also results in a large file: one text only page will come out at 600+ kbs. this is affecting productivity in my business. i need to fix this: scan letter size to letter size. any assistance is appreciated. thank you. i use a toshiba satellite m55 laptop with xp home ed serv pack 3

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

I signed up just to respond to you because we are having the same problem here at work.  We recently bought an HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer and have had the problem since then.  I can help you with the printing of your document, but if you want to fax it, I don't know what to tell you.  Our faxes are being received by people and not printing correctly because of the size of the scanned document (35.39" x 45.51").  All you have to do to print this correctly is go to File>Print to open up the print dialog box (or hit CTRL + P).  Make sure the orientation is the way you want it (Portrait or Landscape) and that you are printing it on the correct size paper.

Right under Page Handling (the third section down on the left side of the Print dialog box, in blue writing), there is a spot where you choose how many copies to print.  Directly below that is Page Scaling.  Usually, "None" is the default.  For documents that are the wrong size (like ours!), change that to "Fit to Printable Area."  In the Preview section on the right, the page view to be printed will change and you should see your entire page fit that area, instead of one tiny corner of the page, which was the previous view.   I never had to use this before, which is why it took me so long to figure out what to do to troubleshoot this problem.

I still haven't figured out how to scan our docs to be the right size (8-1/2" x 11"), but at least we can print it out correctly if it's wrong.  I hope this helps you!

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

I have had a similar problem using a new HP 309A All in one

Here is the problem I have

The new printer 309A using solution centre version 12 increases the page size from A4 to a paper size of 4.166 times the original - see image properties in adobe acrobat at 900mm by 1237mm - it changes the size by a factor of 300/72 = 4.166 - if you scan at any other resolution it changes the size proportionally by a mutiplying factor of the scan resolution divided by 72

This problem occurs in both the pdf and jpg image format

It appears to be problem with HP software Solution Center 12 and linked scanning files

So far in spite of numerous emails to HP support there has not been any solution offered and HP even seem reluctant to believe their software version 12 is faulty

Bye the way earlier versions of Solution Center work fine - such as version 7

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

I recently had this same problem develop with my 8500 Wireless all-in-one.  I was hoping the latest update to the HP software (just downloaded today) would solve the problem, but it did not.  I was told by HP that it's all Adobe's fault, which sounds odd.  Anyone have any ideas for a solution?

This problem is completely solved by using HP solution centre version 13 - ring HP and ask for the download link if its not available on the updated software for your particular printer

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

thanks for the input. I downloaded the patch for the driver - control center, but haven't installed and tried again yet. In the meantime, I will tell you the workaround I found and worked for me: when scanning letter size docs, I scan them to tif (you can view it with windows picture and fax viewer - if multi page - it appears like only the first page is scanned, but look at the buttons and there is a drop down to see all the pages).  Once the scan is done, I rght click on the tif file and then click on the "convert to adobe pdf" option and there you have it, a pdf in the correct size!  It's more work, but at least your recepients won't get a funky pdf or fax. Now, I do have adobe pro 8 installed, so I don't know if you will get this option when right clicking the tif file or if adobe reader will do the trick also. Hope this helps a bit - I will try the driver update although there is no info to tell if it will work on xp.

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

I'm having the same problem with the document size when scanning with the c309A printer.

I'm running Windows Vista (64bit) off an HP laptop.  The problem disappears if I scan as a searchable pdf, although I'd still like to be able to scan documents as a normal pdf.

If anyone is still paying attention to this thread, I have a couple questions:

Did the updated version of the Solution Center (13.0) solve this for everyone? It did not fix the problem for me and I'm trying to figure out why.

If you've had success, how did you install the update?  In other words, did you uninstall the old software and re-install everything off the web, or did you just download the Solution Center 13.0 from the website?

Has anyone had any luck just replacing their printer?

HP tech support has been helpful but was unable to reach an actual solution.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Mike

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

I'm a Mac user with a 8500 DeskJet Pro Premiere all-in-one and I finally gave up and purchased Ed Hamrick's VuScan software, which works like a charm. Just checked and it is also available for Windows, too. See http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm

Download the trial version and give it a whirl. Do report back here. My letter-size docs stay that size now, thank goodness.

P.S. I thougt *I* was the only one still following this thread.   :smileywink:

Re: letter size doc scan results in page 34 x 45 inches large

mwkelly99,

Does the page dimensions problem only occur with normal pdf, or is there a problem with bmp, and tiff files?

The latest version of software should be under the Windows 7 drivers section for your printer.  Here is the link to the OJ 8500.

I do not think the problem is with your printer, but with the file saving portion of the software.  I would also think that scanning with WIA (scanner and camera wizard, or windows fax & scan) would not have this problem.

I work for HP, but these words are mine alone.

[ Edited ]

"This problem is completely solved by using HP solution centre version 13."

Afraid not.  My just-purchased Photosmart Plus B209a scans an 8½x11 page of text at 33x42.78 inches, producing a file of 98k.  This machine came with Solution Center version 13.  Just checked for updates and I'm good.

But when I initiate the scan from Acrobat 8 Standard, I get a 43k file with the proper page size.  Resolution is 300 dpi in both cases.

No biggie, since I only need to do the occasional flatbed scan.  But scanning from this machine's touchscreen would certainly be more convenient..

To previous posters who have described themselves as volume scanners, get a Fujitsu Scansnap.  Greatest thing since canned beer.
