I'm so pissed off at HP, spend several hours on the phone with HP the last couple of days regarding this problem..... they logged onto my computer and saw the problem. Said to me that I was the only one with this issue and would not elevate it or report a software bug. Would only offer a non workable solution.
Then I see this message board and see the problem has been around for several years. HP you need to read the message board. I'm still waiting for a higher level person to call me back. Did see on here to try VUescan sw so I will try that.
Thanks to all on here, however I still HP should fix this issue.
Rick

Rick, you won't regret it. In fact, spring for VuScan Pro...a lifetime of free updates...worth every penny of it. ![]()

Hi all,
I have the same problem. If you don't want to spend any money for vuescan you can do the following. Download a free pdf program like PrimoPDF. After you scan in your document you can then print it with PrimoPDF. This is an additional step but has always printed the document letter size.
Good luck and hopefully HP will fix the issue soon.

youngandhip's method will work but if you want to keep the file on the computer just print to pdf with "Fit to printable area" or "reduce to print margins". if you don't have adobe acrobat, you can print to pdf with a free program called "dopdf". you can get the program at this link: http://download.cnet.com/doPDF-Free-PDF-Converter/

I'm experiencing the same problem on a OfficeJet Pro 8500 A909a. I'm attempting to scan with the settings at...
PDF (non-searchable)
300dpi
Black and white
... but end up with a PDF with a much larger than expected width and height like the others in this thread. Besides adding my voice I wanted to ask if the rest of you have noticed that the PDF file resulting from the above mentioned settings is generated using Acrobat 3.x (PDF 1.2) whereas if I change the setting to PDF-searchable the file is generated using Acrobat 5.x (PDF 1.4) according to the document properties from within Adobe Reader 9. The page size seems wrong when Acrobat 3.x (PDF 1.2) gets used but is correct when Acrobat 5.x (PDF 1.4) is used.
Strange enough that the OfficeJet software is using two different versions of Acrobat to create PDFs but a friend has a DeskJet that is much older and it is able to create PDFs with the proper size regardless of whether or not I make it searchable and it does so using only Acrobat 5.x (1.4). I'm wondering, why the discrepency? Anyone else have the same experience?
Thanks for any info.

Well, I've done a clean re-install of Windows 7 immediately followed by installing the current (14.0.14.18) solution center. No change, page-sized B&W pdf scan comes out 35 inches x 48 inches. Time to re-install ScanVue.

***SOLUTION*****
After several hours of searching this website and board, I finally stumbled upon a solution from someone else's answer.
*DO NOT USE the Scan Document button in the HP Soluton Center* This is where the problem lies.
In the HP Solution Center, Use "Document Manager"(right side link). Go to TOOLS. Select Scan a Document. Scan will be highlighted as a TWAIN. Select where you want to send your scan, and as either PDF or PDF searchable. After it scans, you can make sure the Page size is correct, and can use the 300 PPI. It will save as a proper sized file with a proper sized page.

If anyone is still looking at this . . . I just got off the phone with Adobe (which by the way, it was no easy task to get them ON the phone), and they had a simple solution. When you want to scan, open your Acrobat program, choose Create, then select "PDF from scanner", and then choose your options. It's going to scan at normal size. TA DA!

I'm glad you sleuthed that out. Just tried it and it works! I'm still using VueScan, but it is good to know that it really is possible to get a letter-size pdf out of th 8500 all-in-one.
