I have an Officejet 4500 with a wired Ethernet connection. For some reason my computer stopped being able to scan from it, I can still print copy and everything else fine. I don't recall making any changes to the system and other computers on my network still can scan with no issues. I have restarted my computer, unplugged the printer, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, checked windows firewall settings and cannot find any reason why it will not work. I am running Windows 7 64-bit on the computer that is not working, other computers on my network that still work are running both windows 7 64-bit and XP. On the "HP Imaging device not found" error message that pops up under more info I get this: 8, [ ( 1, 0, -2147221496) ]
I have been through the HPSDU and it says there is a problem with the driver and that it can't communicate with the product. It also says it is unable to scan with windows WIA, and finally it says the Twain component may be corrupted. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, re-downloaded the installer off the HP website several times but cannot fix this problem. Please help.

There are ways to check if the Digital Imaging Monitor (DIM) is installed and running.
1. Check the system tray at the lower right of your screen to see if the DIM (
) is there.
2. If the DIM is present, make sure the PML driver HPZPML is running by typing services.msc in the search box at the start button. On the general tab select automatic from the startup type dropdown, then click start. Close everything and reboot the computer. Check whether hpqtra08 and hpqste08 services are running. If the services are running , discontinue the steps in this procedure, and go back to step 2. If the services are not running , close the Task Manager window, click the Windows icon (
), and then type C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Bin in the Search programs and files box . The Bin folder opens. Double-click the hpqtra08.exe file. When prompted, click Yes to restart the computer. When the computer restarts, look for the hpqtra08 and hpqste08 services again. If the services are still not present uninstall and reinstall the HP software. Try to open HP Solution Center again.
3. If the DIM icon is not present , press the Ctrl , Shift , and Esc keys at the same time. The Task Manager window opens. Click the Processes tab, and then select the Show processes from all users check box.

The DIM is there. Typing services.msc into the search box did nothing so I went tothe task manager and the services tab (Windows 7). None of the seriveces you list are running. I tried running the hpqtra08 file but it doesn't seem to do anything, I even tried running as administrator and checking for compatibilty issues. I restarted ater trying to run it a couple times and still none of the services are running. I have unistalled and reinstalled the HP software atleat 30 times now probably so I am confident taht is not going to fix this issue. I have even gone through and deleted any HP folder I can find as well as a bunch of registry files for HP hoping to clear out whatever is causing this. Any other ideas? Below are the services that are running that have HP in the name.

I ran the Dr. program which asked me to run SDU, below are all the errors. I have run this diagnostic before with the same results.
Driver:
The scan driver is unable to communicate with the product.
Windows WIA Scan:
The HP Scan Diagnostic Utility is unable to scan using the Windows Imaging service.
Solution Center:
The HP Scan Diagnostic Utility has detected issues with some of the HP software components on your system. And says to install a patch that I have tried that did not have any affect.
HP TWAIN Scan:
The Twain component is not functioning correctly because the product is being used by another process
That is as far as I can get, it wants me to restart the computer at this point and never gets down to the registry or other tests.
Thanks.

Hi
Follow the steps below to check the WIA Service:
1. Type services.msc in run or search program and files
2. Scroll down to the WIA Windows Image Acquisition
3. Make sure that this service is running. Click Stop, and then Restart to make sure
4. Restart the computer
Restart the Dependencies services:
1. Click on Start, in Search box type “services” without quotes.
2. Scroll down until you see Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
3. Double click on it and go to the tab called Dependencies.
4. 2 services should be listed.
5. Exit that window and look for Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
6. Make sure it’s on manual or if it is on Auto, just leave it. Make sure the service is started though.
7. Go to Shell Hardware Detection and Double click.
8. Set the Start up Type as Manual and hit Apply.
9. You should be able to Start the service by hitting Start.
10. Now you are done and the Twain Manager should be working and not give you an error.
Check dependencies or sub dependencies:
Right click on WIA (Windows Imaging Acquisition) selecting first properties and then the dependencies tab. It should list: Remote Procedure Call RPC and Shell Harward Detection
Under RPC it will then list DCOM Service Process Launcher and RPC Endpoint Mapper Go back to the main services.msc list and then right click and start all the items listed as dependencies or sub dependencies under WIA

All the servces dependancies and sub dependancies where started and on automatic already. I stoped and started the WIA service and rebooted. I also switched shell hardware detection to manual. Still no luck gettig it to scan. The HPSDU still has the same errors. On the scanner menu it doesn't even see my computer as an option for scan to.

Hi crakerb,
Try using the scrubber built into the CD or Download.
From Original installation CD:
1. Insert CD into drive, and then cancel the installer
2. Open My Computer, and then right click on the CD drive and chose open
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
9. Download the full feature software and drivers
10. Run the download to reinstall the printer
If software was downloaded and extracted to your system:
1. Type %temp% in the run field
2. Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
3. Open folder Util
4. Open folder CCC
5. If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
6. When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
7. Run Disk cleanup from Accessories\ System Tools
8. Download and install the latest version of Adobe flash player
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
9. Download the full feature software and drivers
10. Run the download to reinstall the printer

I ran the l4 installer, used disk cleanup to make sure all temp. folders were cleared out, also made sure flash was up to date and then reinstalled the HP software. It gets most of the way through the installer to the configuring the product check box, then the same old error message pops up about the device not being detected after it sees it on the network and the installer stalls out for 5-10 minutes before poping up that there was a fata error durring installation.
It makes me reboot, then the HPsolution tool is on my desktop which says to run windows update and reboot everything. Done. Then I checked to make sure all cables are connected at the printer's internal web page came up when I put in it's IP address, next it wants me to change the start up services etc. that we already tried.
Any more ideas? I am getting the feeling I may have to format my computer and start over from scratch to get this fixed.

Hi crakerb,
Install the printer on a different computer, and let me know if you have the same issue?
