officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

I have installed the officejet j4580 but am unable to scan or print anything. The machine is visible to the computer but not the 4580?? When I run the HP printer and scan doctor the 4580 is detected but the solution center states that the officejet is disconnected!. Running the print utility results in a message stating there are no problems found but when a test page is supposidly printed nothing comes out (the paper is rolled into the printer but there is no text)! I also can't print any documents.

When I try to run the scanner diagnostic, it gets stuck at the 'HP Twain scan' step and goes no further.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Running win 7 64 bit

using USB connection

have tried uninstalling and re-installing multiple times as well as changing the usb cable and port to no avail.

thanks

Re: officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

It sounds like you might need to scrub the software entirely and start from fresh.  Like the software was never installed in the first place.  I need to know the brand of computer you're using so I can point you to the right scrubber.

Re: officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

Thanks for the responce. I have an Origin computer with a core i7 2600k with 8gb RAM running win 7 ultimate 64 bit.

If it helps I can post the hpps dr log. BTW, when i run it it says the printer is working fine but hangs on the hp twain step for the scanner.

Re: officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

I have followed all the steps you detailed (from a download) but the installer seems to get stuck on the last step (configuring product). I have let it run for about 30 min and then closed it via the task manager. Despite the installer picking up the 4580 the control panel continues to state that the machine is disconnected, no doubt since the installer never finished the configuration?

I have tried 3 times, starting from scratch to no avail. It keeps getting stuck on the last step (I have my antivirus program disabled while installing the product).

Thanks for the continued assistance.

Re: officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

I'm betting that the install just timed out while trying to configure Solution Center, and it didn't get installed right.  Try repairing the Solution Center install.

To repair Solution Center:

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. In the search box, type %temp%
  3. Open the 7z folder.
  4. Open the setup folder.
  5. Open the solutioncenter folder.
  6. Right-click on SolutionCenter.msi
  7. Select repair.
  8. Restart when prompted.
  9. Once the PC is back up, try Solution Center again.

If that doesn't work, try uninstalling just Solution Center and reinstalling it.

To uninstall and reinstall just Solution Center:

  1. Click on the Start menu.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Make sure you have View in the upper right corner set to large or small icons.
  4. Click on Programs and Features.
  5. Scroll down the list and click on Solution Center.
  6. Once Solution Center is selected, click on Uninstall.
  7. Restart the computer when prompted.
  8. Once the computer is back up, run the install.
  9. You will have a different set of options this time.  Select install more software.
  10. Select Solution Center.

Let me know what happens.

Re: officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

I have tried to do as u suggest but when I open the solutioncenter folder all the files are 'packed' in a .cab format! I am unable to detect which one contains the .msi file. Could this be the problem and why is this so difficult? I do appreciate ur help but have never had this much difficulty installing anything since windows 3.1!!

Re: officejet j4580 not printing or scanning

sorry took so long to answer. The solution center never appears in the control panel, as i suspect it was never fully installed, although it does appear in the task bar?

What do you suggest now, other than to get a different printer:mansad:

I really appreciate your help but what could be going on here with this product??
