Scan a document icon on desktop does not function. Reinstallation of software does not correct the matter.

Have you tried running the application directly from the source folder? If not the path below should help you get to the proper file. Inside the hp folder should be another folder with the name of your printer. Inside there should be a "bin" folder. Inside the bin folder is an application that shares the same name as the printer.
C:\Program Files\hp\ [Printer's Name here] \bin\ [Printer's Name].exe
Let me know if the problem persists, but you may also want to try the HP Print and Scan Doctor to see if it can resolve your problem.
