scanjet 4370, (re)installation problem windows xp Sp3

One day my Windows xP Pro SP3 found new hardware after the 1st boot that day. It was the scanjet 4370. I installed it about 2 years ago; Windows was at level SP2 then. Less than 1year ago I installed SP3 and everything worked flawlessly just until 2 weeks ago when the scanner was not recognized any more. You dont want to know all the thinga I tried since that moment. Uninstall the scanner, then reinstall from CD. No success, again the same, now in safe mode. No success. I tried all the various trics from the HP werbsite. No success. I went to the shop where I bought it, because I thought the usb port from the scnner was defective. In the shop they connected the scanner to a virgin PC with XP SP3 and without installing the HP software they got it working in WIA mode and in "camera's and scanners" the scanjet showed up! Amazing! I felt an idiot! Back to home...

I tried to reproduce this tric, but failed. Again and again I tried to install the scanjet 4370, but all tries failed. At the moment thesoftware asks me to connect the scanner, the scanner is not recognized and I'm asked for the installation CD.

Is sp3  a problem? Until now I did not concider uninstalling sp3...but...

I'm stuck, please help me!

Re: scanjet 4370, (re)installation problem windows xp Sp3

Andymc296,

Can you tell me what value you have for Capability key in the registry under the following path?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0000

Is the Capability Key 0x20 or 0x30?

Please try setting it to 0x30 and then restarting the WIA services.

from command prompt:net stop stisvc

from command prompt:net start stisvc

I work for HP, but these words are mine alone.

Can you scan with the Scanners and Cameras wizard?  You should be able to access this from Start->All Programs->Accessories->Scanners and Cameras Wizard.

Re: scanjet 4370, (re)installation problem windows xp Sp3

I brought my scanjet4370 to the junkyard and bought an all-in-one of another brand. More than very disappointed in HP support.  I think I never buy any HP devices again!

[ Edited ]

I tried and tried for months. I wouldn't give up, but finally failed, also fai;ed  when I tried to install the scanjet4370 on my new desktop with Win7. That also cost me some months (I wouldn't give up again) but I finally failed also within Win7 AND also failed in the  win7 virtual machine which ran Win XP-sp3.

My mood got down to the absolute 0 point. Finally I brought the 4370 to the junkyard and cried bitter tears.  The HP scanner was a big mis-investment!   The HP support was {Content Removed} . Period. I do not want to be remembered

wish you all the best, good luck, bye Rudolf.

Re: scanjet 4370, (re)installation problem windows xp Sp3

Scanning problems with all-in-one printer?  Well don’t hold your breath for a quick fix. The HP software engineers are not up to date with Microsoft Vista updates and recent Windows XP updates, and it looks like Windows 7 has the same problem.  And it does not sound like HP will get the problem solved anytime soon.

I just spent 3+ hours with HP Tech Support and they could not fix the problem.  Turning off your virus program, uninstalling the complete printer software package – from the disk or download of the latest version – and then re-installing from the same disk or download did not fix it.  Even using the 3 diagnostic utilities that you can down load did not help much.  Nor running the .bat files from the disk that “cleans” all the HP files out, so you can reload, helped.

No, HP Tech said it was a software compatibility problem, threw up their hands and said there was nothing they could do.  But suggested that I upgrade… except I have the latest, greatest now and they can’t seem to support it.

It seems every HP "all in one printer" has scanner problems, no matter what Windows they are running or what model All-in-One they have.

My next move will be to try an old Restore Point and go back before Microsoft updated Windows.  Then, maybe, my printer software will be compatible again.  If so, I won't be updating Windows until HP has announced a fix, or my printer dies when I shoot it!
