When i scan an image or document either to my computer via wireless or to a copy directly all i recieve is an image full of vertical coloured lines.
I have tried scannning both documents and images and get the same problem.

Try following the steps in this document. There are really only two, and if those don't work, and you are out of warranty, I would think about getting an new printer. You can call HP tech support at 1-800-474-6836 for the US, international users click here, but if you are out of warranty they will charge you for support and will not have much else they can do.
