scanner cannot be found

On a MAC using OS X version 10.6.8, HP photosmart 3180, when I press the scan button on top of printer, a window comes up that states my computer cannot find the scanner.  Help!

Did you install the Full Feature Software and Drivers or did you just let the Mac auto connect to the printer?  If you did not  install the drivers, try uninstalling the printer and reinstalling using the software.
