Re: scanning - files too large!

Thanks so much... it's not just your machine.  I just got an Officejet j4580.  My old HP [Officejet 4315] could scan PDFs at normal size.

The j4580 pads PDF files with about 1000 kb per scanned page, so the original 816 kb PDF became 10, 841 kb.  Other file formats are equally enormous.  I didn't notice last month because I can still email files that large.

I'm gonna chase down the links and solve this.  I've had several HP reps through HP Chat and email, and none of them have any idea what I'm talking about... and yes, they are looking at different screens too.  Probably whatever screen shots they have were from before the software was completed.

Thank you all especially for confirming that it was a software problem.

Best,

ASZ

Re: scanning - files too large!

This fix does not work for my j6480.  When I run the install of the c6380 it knows that I don't have that device so it cancels the installation.  Any suggestions?

As I last said when this question came up, look for a similar model with an updated Solutions Center software download - if it's a laser printer AIO, I guess I'd look up and down the model line. Perhaps someone else has an answer.

Re: scanning - files too large!

Is there a solution for Max OS X?  I installed the updated software for my C7280 only because the old software wasn't compatible with OS X 10.6, and now the scanner is useless because it can't scan documents with multiple pages that can be sent via email.

The problem is that with the Mac, there is not an option to install the software without the OCR feature.   This is very frustrating.

Re: scanning - files too large!

I know, it's very disappointing and quite unbelievable. Besides the workarounds already posted for PCs (i.e. installing a different version of the software, using third-party software, etc.), the only other solution that comes to mind is to have a full version of Adobe Acrobat. There's likely a resolution/file-sizing solution built into the software, though I can't guarantee it.

Re: scanning - files too large!

The file on the C7280 downloads is the same version as the C6380 (version 10.3), and doesn't appear that there is a version 12 that I can see.

I can do a scan on Winbloze that is about a tenth the size of one on my Mac from the same printer, so obviously it's something wrong on the Mac version.

Re: scanning - files too large!

If any one found a way to disable the OCR which is the default please share.

No matter what number you chose below 300, it goes back to 300 ppi.  I scanned blank page and came with 8.5 MB and shows as 300 ppi although I selected 100 ppi.

Thanks

Re: scanning - files too large!

This answer posted elsewhere in this thread is the only workaround for PC users that I know works for me, installing an earlier version of the HP software.

Re: scanning - files too large!

This problem is very annoying.  However, I just figured out a solution for Mac people using 10.5 since I couldn't get Image Capture to work with my Officejet 6500.

1.  Download the free program Combine PDF.

2.  Open HP Device manager and select "Scan Preferences" under the "Information and Settings" tab.

3.  Under Destinations, edit the "Scan to Preview" so that the destination application is Combine PDF, not Preview.

4.  Under Settings, choose "Scan to PDF" and set the default resolution to 150.  Strangely, this default resolution option is not affected by the Scanpro bug of always reverting to 300 dpi and ignoring profile settings.  Also check the "Skip Scan Preview Window".

Now use the HP Device Manager to make your PDFs, not Scan Pro.  When you choose the "Scan to PDF" option it will automatically dump a 150 dpi black and white pdf into Combine PDF.   You can then add additional pages by clicking "Scan to PDF" again from Device Manager.  A four page PDF made through this method was 140KB.

Re: scanning - files too large!

Thank you for your answer.

I experienced something similar with Windows XP OS. The size of the searchable pdf is 500 kB for a syingle page when using the HP Solutions Center software. This is very large compared to using Canon printers at the office.

I tried scanning using Adobe Acrobat 6.0 and the scanned file is 22 kB. It makes use of HP Solutions, but the results are much better.

I like what you did with free pdf software.

I hope there is a better procedure with HP Solutions. The HP software consumes a massive 200 MB to support the printer so more is expected. I've asked HP for a procedure using HP Solutions Center that produces a file closer to 22 kB. No answer yet, but it was just submitted.
