Thanks for posting your solution to 'the touchpad that won't die' problem. I just bought a Pavilion DV7 and it was driving me nuts. Kim

This worked with my 2+ year old laptop running Vista. Good luck!!
jerryfromflorid,
I think that was my posting (message 20); I am so glad it helped you out. My mouse died this week and I had to temporarily re-enable my touchpad. I had forgotten how maddending it was to use that. After I got a new mouse, I actually had to search here to disable the touchpad because I couldn't remember what I did the last time ![]()
Glad you reposted the steps (message 39), yours were much more orderly.
be well,
mspatt

There are a couple of ways to disable the touchpad.
Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings - and click either the "Diable" button or the "Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached".
And/or you can go Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices - and uninstall the driver software and then disable the device.

If you have trouble with the touchpad, you might adjust the settings. I have also updated the driver with the latest release from the Synaptics website. It offers more control than the drivers available on the HP website.
Go to the Synaptics control panel through the Control Panel > Mouse > Device Settings > Settings
I am old school and want my touchpad to act like a mouse, so I disabled most of the fancy settings. I have the touchpad on my TM2T set up with the following settings:
Pinch Zoom - NOT enabled
Enable Pivot Rotate - NOT enabled
Touch Sensitivity - Set at the highest setting
Momemtum - Enabled
Glide Distance - one click to the right of the default center position
Enable bounce off edge of screen - Enabled
Edge Motion - No Edge Motion
Slow Motion - Enabled - RightControlKey
Constrained Motion - Enabled - RightShiftKey
Enable Sticky Borders - NOT enabled
Enable Buttion - Enabled
Tapping - NOT enabled - this also disabled the touch pad disable zone, but this feature does not work beyond with anything but the HP vers. 1 driver. Don't know why or how to fix this. Decided it was better if the touchpad was set to work better.
Enable Three Finger Press - NOT enabled
Enable Three Finger PIck - NOT enabled
Palm Check - maximum setting
Restrict pointing to zone - Enabled - turns off pointing over buttons
Restrict tapping to zone - Enabled - turns off tapping over area above buttons
Filter activation time - 1.5 ticks from the left
Starting Zone - default area
The trouble with the fancy features is that they would sometimes activate when I accidentally brushed one or both palms over the touchpad while typing. Like the touchpad a lot better this way than the default settings.

Can someone please help me resolve my issue!? My warranty is up so it would be much appreciated.
I have an HP Pavillion dv3510nr laptop. The problem I have witnessed over the past few months is the disabling of the touchpad. I have a mouse that has an actual button that you push to turn the touchpad on and off. Off is red light and on is a white light. Somewhere along the line of updating, this had become disabled. I recently discovered that I no longer had the synaptic program and reinstalled it and it has not helped the problem.
I have tried updating the BIOS but when I do and it goes to complete, it shuts down the computer.
The problem I am having that has become quite a nuisance aside from the obvious disabling of the touchpad on and off button/light, is the mere fact that while typing, my cursor decides to move on it's own and places itself in a previous part of a sentence or paragraph of what I am writing and types in between a sentence.
Do you have any suggestions for me as to how to enable the touchpad on/off button so I can turn it off with a push of the button since the option is clearly there and came with the laptop!?
Thank you!

My question, when I go into the mouse setting, I only have the General and Hardware tabs and that is it! Where is the Device Settings tab?? I know the original post is old, but I hope still that someone sees this!
