My HP Pavillion TX 1340ea no longer boots up

When the power button is switched on, all the lights come on, then the hard drive light flashes twice and goes off after which nothing else happens. The screen remains blank and doesn’t even load the BIOS. Does anyone know what might be my problem?

I have the same in a pavilion dv9010.. the first time it happened i just waited for a while and it worked, but now.. nothing happens, i just hear the noise of the cd.

Were you using any usb device before it? it always happens when i have a usb plugged (i think the computer tries to boot up from the usb), but now it wont boot even with all unpluged..

Re: My HP Pavillion TX 1340ea no longer boots up

[ Edited ]

I had the same problem, as well as many others,I added a wireless lazor mouse I got at Christmas, then the symptons you mentioned happened. I tried everything, complete pc recovery, distructive recovery, etc. My laptops 2 yrs old as of 1/1/09. HP told me they'd fix it free of charge, they overnighted a postage paid fedx box to me last Monday, got my laptop back today, works great, they installed a new motherboard. HP did me right, system works great now. good luck to you.

Re: My HP Pavillion TX 1340ea no longer boots up

This sounds like the same problem I have been troubleshooting for two days.  I was about to start replacing hardware in my TX1000 but decided to flip through the troubleshooting section of the Quick Ref Guide that shipped with the PC (for the 10th time) and I resolved the issue.

I'm not sure if the power button/slider will be the same on the TX1340ea, but mine is a slider on the front of the PC.  This may work though for any type of power button following the same suggestion.

Briefly (lightly/quickly) slide or press the power button - just like you are normally powering up the PC but try to slide/press the power switch fast and then let go.  If it doesn't work the first time, power it down and try again.

I hope this suggestion is the resolution to your problem.  I was really shocked and happy when it worked for me because I was sick thinking I had a bad disk and/or power issue that pushed my disk over the edge.  The same thing happened to me about a month ago and after trying to boot the PC a dozen times, it suddenly worked and I had no idea why or what happened.  I was just relieved when the problem seemed to be a one-off, no errors were in any of the event logs, diagnostics all looked good, so I just moved on and thought it was sun spots or something.

Please reply and let me know if this suggestion helps any of you.  If it does, the underlying issue is that the PC was either sleeping or hibernating and this is the only way to wake it up.  I glanced at this troubleshooting step before but I never sleep or hibernate my PC manually and I have my power options set to never sleep or hibernate either.

I've discovered that both times my PC went into this mode, I had been doing updates that required a reboot and then restart to finish installing files (two different vendors - MS and Norton).  I've had this PC almost 2 years and I can't explain why all of a sudden these 2 unrelated updates have caused my PC to sleep/hibernate because I do updates all the time.  I suspect this random sleep bit could get flipped by most any software application and probably not specific to MS or Norton - it could be a combination of hardware and software.  "Something" tells the PC to sleep instead of reboot normally and this appears to be the cause of my strange problem both times it has happened.

Symptoms I experienced - PC powers up, disk LED flashes once or twice and no other indication that the disk is working (I think the fan spins though), all of the LEDs on the PC are lit up - volume controls, wireless LED, etc - but nothing happens if you press the buttons like mute, etc - just pretty lights except no disk LED after the initial flicker.  If a CD is in the drive, it will light up, spin the drive a few times and then stop.  I was unable to get any of the BIOS/system options to function (F2, F10, etc) and the PC will not boot from a bootable CD if one is in the drive when powered on.  There are no beep codes or any sounds other than the CD drive turn a few times if a CD is present.

If I were king, I might give some kind of clue like some beeps or at least wake the PC up if you insert a bootable CD and reboot.  Maybe I missed the obvious but I knew I didn't put the machine to sleep and knew it wasn't set to sleep so I didn't try this 'fix' the first few times I read about it.  Oh well, I'm just happy my PC is well-rested and it's an easy fix when it happens again.

Good luck!

Re: My HP Pavillion TX 1340ea no longer boots up

Hi, we all have the very same problem.. see this page http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01087277#c01087277_identify  to know if you are eligible for free repair.. HP doesn't say exactly what is the problem, and what they will do with your computer, they just recommend you to upgrade your BIOS (that updates the fan control algorithm), and in case your computer has any of the symptoms already, use their extra warranty. I know what is the problem but I don't know how to explain in english :smileytongue: .. but I will try.. the problem is with hp's project.. there is a chip (BGA (Ball Grid Array)) that controls some of the peripherals (videos, wireless...) and this chip uses the same heatsink as the processor, the problem is that the heatsink is about 3 CM far, and HP uses a kind of "thermal tape", but apparently it is not enough and the chip lose its solder (?) causing a bad contact (that's why some related that at the beginning the computers sometimes starts (I said that :smileytongue:), or weird ways to press the power button :smileytongue:.. That's it.. i hope you understand :smileyhappy: and i hope you are eligible for the free repair.. I will have to pay about $200 to have it soldered (reballing) and with its own heatsink.

Re: My HP Pavillion TX 1340ea no longer boots up

I would be careful saying that "we all have the very same problem" and linking to that support article.  I don't disagree that the article may address the problem you have with your PC, but this thread is about the TX model, which is the same model PC that I have.  The article is very specific about which models are addressed by the fix and the TX models are not impacted by that issue nor are they eligible for the service enhancement described - read all the way through the article to the FAQ section and it clarifies the models that fall into this category.

Also the symptoms don't exactly match the issue I had with my TX model anyway.  My fan runs fine when I boot up even though it is in sleep/hibernate.  The notebook does get power because I can plug and unplug the AC adapter when the PC is in sleep/hibernate and both power LEDs change corresponding to whether I unplugged the adapter or plugged it back in.  I was surprised when I finally woke my PC up because the AC was actually charging my battery if I had the PC 'booted' up but it was asleep.  And as I indicated in my previous message listing the symptoms I ran into, there is no beep code from the PC at all. That was one of my gripes because a beep code will at least give you a clue about the problem.

I'm sure the issue you posted with the link to the article is the root cause of some similar issues on other models listed but it doesn't apply to the TX.  I can also reproduce my problem by manually putting the PC into sleep or hibernate.  Same exact symptoms as before and the same step I described earlier has worked on each repro.

There seems to be several similar but unrelated issues and fixes - on various PC models.  I don't want to discourage anyone from checking support articles and obviously the issue in that article is impacting a lot of users.  But - at least for my PC problem and resolution - the suggestion I posted earlier did work for my TX and I can repro it over and over again.  If anyone has one of the PC models listed in the article in the previous post from Porto_Filho with the same issue described, follow those steps and get the free repair.

Sorry Porto, not trying to be argumentative but the first sentence in your post might send some people down the wrong path if they have a TX - and it sounds like HP wouldn't be able to help TX users anyway if that issue is only impacting specific models and isn't a class problem with any Pavilion.

Thanks for your post too because one of my friends called me earlier with one of the models listed and your help with this is going to resolve the issue he is having.:smileyhappy:
