Perhaps you should try disabling some of the unnecessary services running on your laptop.
Also ensure that it isn't infected by any sort of virus.
If you still have your warranty, that's the best solution you can get: Send it for service! ![]()

I have some things for you to try.
I hope they help, please let me know the results.
1. Turn off your Notebook
2. Boot it up while tapping the F10 key to get into the BIOS
3. Once in the BIOS choose the diagnostic tab and run the hard drive test, it will run a short one and then a long one, let them both run.
If it fails stop right there and call support, if it passes move on to the next step.
Back up any essential files you have to some external source, disks, hard-drives etc.
and run a Recovery by shutting down the unit
Booting up while tapping F11 (you need to be on AC power) it will take you into the recovery Mgr.
Say no to all the options until you get to Recovery since you already saved you files you can say no to the back up your files option, that is good in case you have a virus. Remember this will wipe out your data and put it back into factory condition, it won’t remove the BIOS update you did so that’s good.
It will take about 30-45 mins to run from the partition, don’t interrupt it until it is finished
Remember that if you backed up any data to a disk or drive you should take that to a Computer that has up to date Antivirus SW and scan it before putting it back on your Notebook after the recovery, better safe than sorry.
Okay your back with a fresh factory image, you will need to do some updates again (sorry about that)
Then I’m going to give you some links on keeping your notebook clean etc

I always use a chillpad with my Notebooks and make my family do it too, you still need to put them on a hard surface or their intake vents can get covered.
When loading SW take time to look at the options when you load them, when it asks if you want them to load on boot choose no, you can then launch them when you need them instead of everything loading at boot.
Don’t forget to have good up to date Antivirus SW, I also recommend Windows Defender.
Run frequent Defragmentation on your Hard-drive.
Good luck and let me know how it works out for you.

I think it makes a real difference.
Also if you’re not using things like the Aero interface or Total care Advisor you can turn those features off, does not mean you are deleting them, just not having them active on boot, you can always choose when you want to use them.
All these things may help you get more out of what you already have.
Sorry if you put this in already and I did not see it, but what is the Product number off the service tag on the bottom of your notebook?
If it’s a CTO just tell me the memory, OS version and processor you have.
Thanks

Product #: It says kd480av on the bottom of my computer but says kd436av in Help & Support under system info
Processor is the AMD zm-80 (2.10 GHz)
3 GB RAM
Running Windows Vista Home Premium (service pack 2 just recently installed)
Defrag'd the hard drive yesterday and cleaned air intake vents - so I should be in good shape. I don't worry about chillpads because I keep (and use) my computer on my solid surface countertops (it is the computer's home base and I also do all my work on the breakfast bar of the same material). I will keep that in mind for Acer Aspire One because I do use that on my lap sometimes.
I really appreciate the help and tips - although they haven't helped me with my current issue they will come in handy in the future. Computer is still behaving as if something is repeatedly using the CPU (maybe looking for something on hard drive) and momentarily locking up my tasks. Hard drive also makes a high pitched sound. I just don' t know. I thought for sure the factory restore would solve it. Thanks again!

Well I'm sorry it is still running slowly
I know you said in the thread you updated the BIOS, since you have SP2 I just want to check you have F.0C it has SP2 support.
You probably do but if it turns out you don't here is the link to the Softpaq that will give you the latest BIOS F.0C
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and look at the links
Good luck.
