Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

i disagree about the being "locked in" part. as a class member of the same settlement, you receive the same settlement, not a completely different one from people who file sooner. I just do not think it is legally possible for them to say "oops. too late. your neighbor gets a better computer than you".

and yes, as i mentioned before, i would not advise sending your computer anywhere until this is all settled.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

any update on this?

I started working on a tx1000 touchscreen for a client.

another tech had removed the hard drive, then I found the DVD drive was broken.

I spent $160 on parts and recovery DVD from HP, then got vista up and running and now see there is a lot of video corruption and the machine shuts down on it's own.

He bought the machine refurbished and he's currently looking to find his receipt.

not sure I can help this guy further and I hope I'm not out $160 for my parts.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

As you can see this is a relatively lengthy discussion.  As an avid HP owner, since 1992, 2 desktops, and 6 laptops, one of which is a tx-1000, I was extremely disappointed about the graphics failures, and side-effects of it. However, since my screen started having problems after the warranty period, i did a little digging, and found that it is actually quite simple to fix.  NOTE: this is not simple for everybody, and you must be confident with what you are looking at, and taking laptops apart.  It is not for the feint of heart.

I don't advise the baking method, but rather the use of a shield and a heat gun, and or re-soldering, and installation of additional heatsink (available on EBay for about $.04 USD +$2 shipping). I actually used a penny (with high copper content) prior to re-soldering.  You can make a custom shield out of a small piece of corrugated and some heavy Reynolds wrap aluminum foil, if you're going to use the heat gun method.

Cut out an opening just large enough to see the gpu.  Use your heat gun with a medium temperature setting (about 200 degrees Fahrenheit) and gradually heat up the chip (moving gun back and forth).  After about 4 minutes of heating, using a flat heat resistant item, like a nickel, push down on the chip, applying about 6 pounds of force (USE CAUTION - MOTHER BOARD MUST BE SUPPORTED OR YOU RISK BREAKING YOUR BOARD) for about 45-60 seconds, and then let the board cool.  Re-install, and your screen should return to normal.  If there is still an issue, while the computer is starting up, or after running for awhile, press down the enter and \ key just above it firmly and see if there is any response.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

Also, as an added note, there is a remedy for the owners of these tablet-notebooks.  If you are insistent on keeping your tablet, repair it.  If you're interested in one of the remedies provided in the class action suit, visit http:www.nvidiasettlement.com/ for remedy details.

By going to the above address, you will leave the HP.com website.  HP neither endorses, or acknowledges the above site regarding the settlement.  Users are to use at their own discretion and risk.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

I seriously don't know how HP stays in business.  My TX100 died just past the warranty.  I'd been having trouble with it but thought it was the wireless card which would have been an easy fix.  Wrong.......  It was a bad chip on the motherboard.  I considered having it repaired but was told they were repairing them with the same defective chip which would fail again at some point.

Today I received a ASUS as replacement from the class action settlement.  http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/

I paid $768.52 for my TX1000 and they replaced it with a $300 ASUS.  The only thing the TX1000 and the ASUS have in common is that they are both PCs.  But there was nothing more I could do and I resigned myself to the fact that I had done all I could do and at least the ASUS is a working computer.  Then I booted it up and the Windows 7 startup operating system is in a foreign language!   German I think..........    To say I am frustrated is an understatement.

Everytime I pass an HP display I tell anyone who will listen.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

I got my EeePC replacement too. Even it's a smaller and cheaper laptop, I am glad that I don't own a HP anymore.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

There should also be a TX2 recall. People with ATI/AMD chips have the same problem. There might be some connection between the Nvidia failures and the ATI ones.

CAREFUL WITH HP CARE SERVICE PLANS

I experienced a lot of the problems you all talked about

  1. Machine Overheats
  2. Adapter damaged because of overheating
  3. Screen goes blank for no reason
  4. Had trouble with the Wi Fi at some point and got that replaced
  5. Very loose hinge. Sometimes screen will move around as I type, and it is a laptop so sometimes it just won't stay upright in certain positions.

But I decided to get the exteded warranty the HP Care Package Service Plan and dish out those extra 200 bucks to get covered for a couple of years since I have had problems before w/ laptops like Dell and the warranty always covered it.

I have had this product since 2008, and last year they sent me a Renewal Email for my service plan and I decided to take it, I didn't want to buy a completely new laptop just yet and this one was still running.

166 - HP 1YR POST WRTY PICKUP&RETURN ESP W/

12 Months $189.99

I started having issues again and decided to call in since my warranty covered service and hardware still for some time. I paid the money I was going to make sure to get my worth.

I put in 2 orders (for my laptop to be picked up and serviced) and they never arrived, they usually arrive within 2 days. I called again a 3rd time a week after tired of waiting and the Representative told me the orders had been canceled, even though no one had notified me, not even an email.

The reason was that the product was now "obselete", and that they didn't have any parts to replace potentially damaged ones.

Fine the product is "obsolete" but I paid for full year service! You mean to tell me that I paid for something that you can't offer?!? Don't you make the parts?  I'm just wondering can anything be done about the issue? Prorate my remainder, or something?

I asked the tech, and he just kept telling me the product was "obsolete". Ok but I still paid for something you were suppose to give me for a full year. Can anything be done? He said he would put me on hold while he got his manager, he had me on hold for 40 minutes!!! I figured they just wanted to keep me waiting so that I would hang up; the problem goes away? I had work so I had to get off soon, but  I will be calling back!

Is this false advertisement? Breach of contract? What should be done when you paid for a service you are not fully receiving? If they send another HP Care Pack Renewal, {Content Removed: legal discussion} for trying to sell something they can NOT offer and are not fully disclosing those details to their customer.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

Agreed with other comments- THERE SHOULD BE A CLASS ACTION SUIT ALSO FOR TX2 MODEL OWNERS!

HP is literally messing with fire. They are avoiding the product liability issue from a potential life loss due to fire from these machines. HP, if your listening, don't be censor and delete my posting... this is a recorded digital document.

Re: Why is there no TX1000 recall?

About the DIY comment of making a simple heat sink-

Why do you think the manufacturer wouldn't do this?  Wouldn't it be easier instead of sending some low-end pc's out to the class action suit recipients?

Also, with your DIY fix, what is the exhaust fan temperature?

Thank you.
