Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

I've read so many cases like me...
I've a tx2 note bought on july, 2009. Three weeks ago (March, 2010) the computer simple does not go up, no response, blank screen. After typing with HP Support they said me to take the computer for assistance, but now I'm outside US. So I let my note to a local HP Assistance: the video chip was burned. $300 bucks later I have my note back. Now with the fan working at 100% 24x7.
They said me this computer has a problem of over-heating that can burn your board. I've noticed that the new BIOS of many models of HP changed the config to enable the fan working all the time. I've turned it off.... and lost my video chip...
So DO NOT SWITCH OFF the BIOS setting of "FAN ALWAYS ENABLED". You can fry your note now or very soon after the end of warranty...
Where is the HP engineering? All the techicans I've talked say about the overheating of HP notebooks, mainly the AMD ones...

Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

I have found a solution that works for me.  Reset your theme to "Windows Basic".  I have not had the problem since doing this.

Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

Your computer goes up on theme "Windows Basic" because it does not use many of the resources of your video card, mainly the resources related to tranparency.

You have a problem in your video card/chip. This is a common problem in HP notebooks, mainly on AMD ones, that goes too hot until it melts the video chip pins. Once it happens, some resources of the video chip does not work and others do, like for Termn8er, when only the basic video functions can make the computer go up.

So I recommend you to lead yout note on Assistance to see whats happening and perhaps re-melt the video chip pins and have your note with full video resources.

Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

I have the same problem.  I thought it was happening because it was cold.  However today I left it on while I did some other work, and came back to the horizontal lines.  So it happens in a warm state also.  I'm really glad that I came to this forum, maybe we can find out whats going on.  I am so agravated with it.  I reinstalled my os, no help!  I'm looking for a pc for my grand daughter, unless hp comes up with an explanation, it won't be an hp!

Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

I decided to see what happen when I leave the darn thing on!  Well, I still have the horizontal lines, however I only had to turn it off and then on only once.  So it still comes on like that when its warm.

Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

VONAH,

I have a tx2-1375dx out of warranty (18 months after purchase), AMD CPU. My problem seems also to be related to the video chip but also to the display. You can see my screen in a blog I am writing about tablets pc in science education, in http://tabletsinscienceeducation.wordpress.com/2-tablet-pcs-and-tablets/

There you see what screens I got. If the pc is cold, it starts and then the screen fills with randomly off-color pixels. If not, then the HP logo comes out of sync, spread all over the screen. And keeps on going until the blue screen appears.

Then I tried warming up the display from the back side. And after that it works, error recovery screen comes up and then the normal boot up process.

If it is cold, now I warm it up with a hair dryer and runs fine. I had also a fan cooling pad underneath.

My guess is that the video chip circuitry uses also a thermal sensor or something else on the display module when it warms up sends the right signal to the video chip (an ATI Radeon) and everything is OK.

In that view, the video chip may have been damaged in part with heat along the time.

The thing is now in the HP parts store I do not see the video chip itself but the whole motherboard for $230 or so.

What do you think? I am working in a campus branch outside of the US, and do not have a HP Assistance around to  rely on. Should I get the motherboard, replacing the current CPU?

Or should I keep warming on the display?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Re: touchsmart tx2 display problems at start up

Mr Aberra,

I had many problems with my TX2 tablet... And also with other ASUS G2S. They were top computers, but both had similar problems.

Nowadays the motherboards on the massive computers are thinner and in different materials (mainly on blue, greem and yellow colors that means the ´lifetime´  of them). The AMD computers are very known (at least until 1 year ago) to become too hot very fast, and the cooling systems similiar as used with Intel chips  cannot cold them enough. So it becomes too hot. The new video card drivers also induce the video chip to warm more tham expected.

Joining the 3 problems, after 1-1.5 year most of the tx2 tablets  (or after 2-3 years in other laptops) with the action of very hot surfaces + shocks + thin motherboard = video card malfunction. The pins of the video card chips melt and these kind of problems comes to screen. Some inner parts of the chip also melts and the problems go bigger.

You wrote that your computer works when you hot it. It can be explained that witth the temperature some pins connect again and the video card works fine. It is also possible your fan is too dirty (have you opened and tried to clean the inner fan?) and was onde of the cause of the problem.

So the solution:

1. It is a very common problem in laptops (on TX2 earlier). So go to a specialist to take the video card out and to weld again the píns of the chip.

2. if it does not solve the problem your chip has inner meltet. So buy a new video card chip and weld it again.

3. If it also niether solves, your thin motherboard has melt... so buy a new one...

Definitive solution: buy a brand new HP TouchPad Wi-Fi 16GB for US$399,00. Outside USA? it´s a bit more expensive...

I know that it´s not a good ideia for you that uses the touch features on class... but...

Have a nice weekend.
