Hi Snopaw,
Can I get a little more information about your monitor and Touchsmart 600?
You mentioned that your monitor is the 2709 but the only monitor I was able to find is the 2709m.
Here are some instructions for getting it set up:
You said that it only came with a VGA cable and not a USB cable. Besides VGA the monitor will most liketly have a DVI input and possibly an HDMI input. According to the info on the page I linked to above, a VGA cable is the only one included with the monitor.
Can you give me some more info about your Touchsmart PC, like the full product name like "HP TouchSmart 600-1105xt" or the product number? That will help me determine what type of outputs your PC has.
Thanks!

Thanks for replying. HP Touchsmart Product number is NY5388AA. Yes the monitor is 2709m. It has a VGA, a DVI and a hdmi. It has none of the gaming commention, only USB, a Lan port, a S video connection. I looked online but I didn't see any USB on one end and hdmi on the other. I saw some vga to usb cnnections but wasn't.
sure if they would work.
Thanks for your help

It looks like you will need to get a USB-to-Video device.
Here's a decent one for around $40 on amazon:
When you plug that into a USB port on your Touchsmart PC it will basically turn it into a connection for your second monitor.
Some people have commented that hooking up a USB-to-Video device may cause your touchscreen functionality to act up. If that happens, disconnecting the USB-to-Video device should stop it.
Since you already have a VGA cable, you don't need to buy any additional cables but you will need to use the DVI-to-VGA adapter that comes with that device I linked up above.
I hope this info helps!

I just wanted to let you know that I received the part as per your recommendation and it works perfectly. Additionally it was extremely easy to hook up. I am now overwhelmed with two great HP monitors
