Can icons be moved manually (rather than connected to the grid) on the Magic Canvas / TouchSmart?

            I do not understand your question because Magic Canvas is for pictures not icons. Here I provided a link . When you are on this page. Click on Touchsmart Tutorials. Unfortunately, the informnation on the tutorial was not helpful.

As far as the icons go.....when one switches from the standard desktop to the Magic Canvas the icons are copied to the MC.  However, if the icons arranged by the user on the standard desktop the arrangement is not copied to the MC.  Rather, the icons are placed in a grid.

I want to be able to arrange the icons myself on the MC.

You seem to be confusing the Magic Canvas with the "Canvas" app, two different things. The Magic Canvas is the desktop view/background when you run the "HP Touchsmart Magic Canvas" -- which will also bring up the Carousel (if not disabled), and other Magic Canvas features. Think of it as another Windows Manager.

The "Canvas" app is for pictures.

Unfortunately, I don't think this is possible. These are the only settings available for the Magic Canvas related to desktop icons:

Strangely enough, none of my desktop icons show up when this is enabled though
