Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

Hi I have a HP touchsmart IQ772 computer and I have the drivers updated.

I used to be able to connect to my router without any problems but in the last few months I have had problems.

When I turn my computer on it will not find a network and I need to restart the computer continually until it finds the network. This sometimes takes me over 30 mins off restarting.

I know its not a fault with the router because there is a Laptop in the house and that connects fine aswell as my Xbox.

I have tried numerous things to get it working but nothing seems to help.

Thanks

Re: Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

Hi, there.  I scanned the online docs - am wondering if you have developed a spyware issue?  See if you can follow these steps:

Re: Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

Davidrfc91,

if you need to restart over and over that tells me the card and drivers are "ok" but may be having a problem loading in. While the Maintenance guide link will help you do some system maintenance, I'm wondering if you are just not giving the system enough time to load the drivers.

You mentioned this has been going on for the last few months, can you recall when exactly it started happening and what changed? more than likely there was something, even as simple as an update to software on your system.

A couple things to look at

When you can't connect what state is your wireless icon show in the systray (down by the clock).

Does it ask you to "connect to a network" if you click on that does it show your network?

Check in Device manager and look at the state the wireless card shows

A couple things to try.

Make sure you have all Windows updates loaded and HP updates loaded. If there are any updated drivers etc. you should use them.

You may want to even try un-installing and re-installing the wireless card driver and then re-setup your wireless connection from scratch.

good luck

Re: Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

I cant remember what changed to make this happen.

If the computer turned off and then I turn it back on straight away it will connect fine.

But if i leave it for over 30mins or so it will not connect. This means I then need to spend another 30 mins resarting the computer for the network to connect.

Everything on the computer is up to date and I have re setup my wireless connetion and updated and reinstalled the drivers but none of this has worked.

I heard from someone that a loose connection or a defect in the wireless adapter or the motherboard causes the adapter to disappear. The adapter is in the motherboard on this PC. Could this be the problem?

Re: Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

Still looking for the answers to those other questions I asked.

as far as a loose connection or bad card/motherboard - possible but not probable especially if you are able to connect. I would sespect it to be loose before I'd think it was bad especially if leaving it on and rebooting brings you back, it could have something to do with "warming up" the connection which could mean it is loose.

Re: Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

sorry what do you mean by the state ?

On the icon tray when my computer isnt connected it is just a red x

When it is connected it is blue with a globe.

And on the device manager the adapter does not show up when I am disconnected

And when I am connected it shows up fine.

Re: Computer Wont Find Wireless Connection

I'm a little confused now it doesn't sound like everything is adding up.

Is the Red X that is on the network icon in the systray a picture of a computer? If so that is refering to your wired network card and unless you have your system connected via a wired connection this is ok.

Here is a good document for troubleshooting network connections.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01603181&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_US...

but it may be an internal cable especially if you can't find the wireless card in device manager. If it isn't showing up there the system is not loading the driver for it and you won't be able to connect. Try the info in the document, and then look inside your PC, here is a link to all the docs for the IQ770's. I believe the wireless adapter is actually plugged into one of the USB headers on the motherboard. (that means the USB connection is inside the PC)
