Error code 0x800106ba when attempting to turn on and open Windows Defender

I get the error code when I attempt to turn on and open windows defender after try to go Control Panel->Change startup programs. I get a pop-up instructing me that Windows Defender is switched off and giving me a link to "Turn on and open Windows Defender" - it's after clicking on that that I get the error message pop-up.

I'm curious if you are using vista or win7.  You could uninstal it and reinstall it from here.

how do you uninstall?  I tried to download and it told me that I already had Windows Defender so it wouldn't install

It looks like lots of folks have wanted to uninstall the Defender program. Here is some help:
