I have exactly the same issue. I am an IT professional so know my way round a PC pretty well. I have found quite a few people with the same problem, but not many with fixes.
I think it is a Video issue, but unfortunately there are 2 stumbling blocks. Firstly I belive that the video card is intergrated (Correct me if Im wrong), which means you'll need a new motherboard, which in plain english means new computer!! Secondly if you tried to open this thing up you would have worked out how difficult it is to work on!!
Im at a real loss as to what to do! I can't seem to find anyone that has worked on something like this before.
If you find out any info please let me know. It is increasing looking like I wont be able to get this repaired!?

Hi, you have expressed my worst thoughts. This is my 4th day without my PC on this occasion, the last occasion was 5 weeks before it suddenly woke up for no apparent reason. I didnt do anything to fix it the first time, I just turned it on one morning and it booted up and operated perfectly for over a month. So, as I dont know why it suddenly sprang back into life the last time, I have no idea what to do now.
As you say, it's not easy to gain access to the component parts, I'm way out of my comfort zone with this one. £1200 down the drain me thinks!!! Forunately it's not my only PC so I can continue to work but I'm absolutey gutted as I dont seem to be able to get any help without paying a large amount up front with no garrantee of a fix.
it's 6 months out of it's warranty. I've had one expert in to take a quick, free of charge, look but he just shook his head and said he could give it a go but may do more harm than good.
I contacted HP and their tech guy sent me an email to say, and I quote, "I think it's gone bad" what is that supposed to mean. A very technical term.
Thanks and sorry i cant be of more help to you, J

For the IQ700 series
If you're running Windows Vista SP2, there is a patch for USB patch for NVIDIA chipsets
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975163/
If you're running Windows 7, install this patch

PC_Tester: I've found 2 different post where users share the issues they're having with their video cards on this machine. I am personally having the same issue and noticed in both post you advise to have that patch install. The problem is, how do you install that patch if the screen is black?
If i unplug the power cable for about 3 mins and plug it back in, the HP logo comes up and then just freezes in the post screen forcing me to hold the power button till the unit powers off. If i try to turn it back on right away, the unit powers up yet the screen remains black (no hp logo this time)
Any other suggestions?

I have a 2 year old IQ770 and have just experienced the same exact problem! How can this be???? Of course my warranty is out. I was unable to contact the HP chat, tried 5 times and every time the agent would finally be available, I would be unable to type in the box. Finally contacted via e-mail, and they at first assured me that there was nothing wrong with their chat support! Then I have exchanged about 6 e-mails for e-support, trying everything that they suggested....re-moving and replacing the hard drive, the memory card, unplugging, etc. Then I discovered this posting! What a lemon!!! Does anyone know how much a motherboard costs? The last e-mail that I got from them said that I could send it in for a minimum of $300. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sounds like this problem is not the only problem common for this machine.
