Hey Octavean,

I would suspect the following.

if you have graphic problems with NO card installed then installing one may not solve the problem.

if you have some liquid flux then apply a little of that, make sure you give the board a good clean after.

Pull out the reflow gun, crank it up to 214c and give the area around the Graphics chip some attention.

Part of the problem is that the RHOS (less lead) soldier used in production is not as good as 'old school' soldier.

Well in this case the video is integrated into the Southbridge chip if I am not mistaken. If there is an issue with the Southbridge chip or its physical connection to the chip due to a manufacturing flaw and or poor materials then it would be something I would prefer to replace.

Perhaps a little physical pressure to the chip (Southbridge) would help during the boot up process if there is a physical connectivity issue with the chip and the board but I would rather pull the board and replace it like a bad tooth if that were the case.

I also kind of like the idea of upgrading the motherboard to something more current but that will likely cause its own set of problems.

I’ve been looking for parts online. e-bay has some IMISR-CF (Eve) motherboards (“as is“ whatever that means) starting at ~$25 but the average overall seems to be around ~$200.  I did find one place that seems to be selling complete refurbished Touchsmart IQ505 systems and some systems without the touch screen for a fairly low ~$340.  Resellerratings.com has 7.83 out of 10 for the dealer in question and this would be a treasure-trove of spare parts although the one with the screen should be functional out of the box.

Don't hold your breath waiting for 100% perfect products to be produced...

The onboard Graphics seems to have it's own chip from what I saw but I was not looking hard.

The applying pressure is simply a method of fault detection, once detected, reflowing over the affected area can cure some problems.

Will it have another problem in the future,??  who knows,

Will there be another war, Humm I could answer that with more clarity..

You can get complete faulty units off ebay, and take the gamble,

not sure about in the US but the UK is just bubbling with faulty touchsmarts.

Some go for as cheep as £30 some up to £200.

I got a faulty 600 series the other week for just £94 delivered.

Pulled a needle from the fan and job done.

Cost me a hard drive and 7A power supply and it's now complete and 100% working 

No IQ505's at all though, must be a US thing.

Although I did find a MB at  #150508933484

As-Is, tends to mean that it was either untested and it is anyones guess if it works 

or it has been tested and is faulty, all depends on the seller.!!

It can be hard for some people to test boards 100%, more so if they do not have a working unit to try them in.

But lets be honest,

if the board can break sitting on your desk inside a protected case,

what could happen to it in transit.?.

As with everything, life is a gamble and nothing is for certain.

All risks should be undertaken with awareness

of both the possible positive and negative results

Yeah, I’m not a fan of e-bay so I typically steer clear.

This other dealer had a few units that were tested and were 100% functional for about ~$330 but they didn’t last long since they sold fairly quickly. My thinking was if I bought something like that I could use its parts to determine the faulty component in the on I currently have. Then I could in theory order the part to complete the repair and have two functional Touchsmart systems.

If I remember right, you do not have a MXM card, so that can be eliminated as the fault.

There is nothing else to replace on the board apart from the RAM and processor.

If your machine is like all the rest I have seen then to solve your problem

you will have to attempt to reflow the Onboard graphics controller.

If you do not have the tools for this then find someone that does.!

Best not to drive yourself mad talking round in circles.

It is a fairly comman problem with one or two know solutions.

That's it....

I just bought another today. 20 mins later it is alive and 100% working.

I just love this stuff, comman problems and no body has a clue...

I wonder if HP actually read any of these posts and wonder why people are quick to rubbish their products. !!!.

In years to come when the landfill is dug up as historic ruins,

will the people of the future know about HP and their shocking products. ?

ANYWAY, I HAVE A LOT OF TIME ON  MY HANDS AND CAN PUT TOGETHER A LETTER (LEGAL ONE) TO THE RIGHT COMMISSIONER TO GET SOME ATTENTION WITH WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A DEFEFCTIVE MONITOR OR PRODUCT. yes thats the only way i can get on my computer with a second monitor but the colors dont look the same they are a little off but better than nothing
