Hey Lily,
If the computer crashes due to a graphics failure then the chances of you loosing data is like 0.01%.
Your data is stored on the hard drive and even if the machine was not able to be recovered then
you could simply remove the drive, put it into a USB caddy and access your data that way.
I have a feeling that changing the power supply had no effect and
it may have simply been the moving of the wires and board that has rectified the fault temporarily.
Normally the graphics faults are due to Failed boards or failed connections,
or failed connections on the boards !
If you paid for the service and it has not fixed the problem they you should request your money back.
Leaving it on can be an option but as heat is a large fator in the failure if
the airflow has not been improved then it may be doing the same (overheating and slow cooking).
To be honest, if a device you own is not reliable how much do you want to rely on it.?
It may be time to concider updating the hardware to someting more stable.

Sound more like a power supply or non graphics issue.
Do the fans spin,? do the lights come on,?

Just curious how power supply makes the difference....would be fantastic if that cures the problem!

I guess if the power supply is faulty then a change over would sort it out..
Never seen a faulty supply but that does not indicate that it cannot happen.
Obviously in the situation above it sorted things out.
Black screens could always be a few, different or combined, things from power to broken connections or faulty components.
Removing the Onboard graphics card is a fairly simple process that will help to eliminate that from the list of possibilities.
If the Machine boots up fine without the card then you can opt to use it while you find a replacement.
Well worth the effort...
Some of these machines are getting a bit old now and as such the 2nd hand spare parts you purchase may not be far off failing themselves.
If only HP had designed the screen module to be complete with a fairly standard interface.
Then at least people may have had the option to replace the 'computer' with something else while keeping the touchscreen.
No doubt they will all end up in the crusher after time.
Hope that helps.
