Hi, Can anyone please help??
I have an IQ790; 3 months ago the screen went blank; I removed the graphics card & moved over the monitor cable & everything worked perfectly. However, last week the screen froze while on standby & wouldn't re-boot; I disconnected everything, cleaned the heatsink etc; reconnected & it started. But today it's gone again & nothing is bringing it back (I've tried starting in BIOS 20 times, heated the GPU)! The power light is on continuous, the green light at the front blinks once on start up & the fans are working, although they do sound a bit loud.
I have absolutely no knowledge of computers & have only managed the above through visiting these sites. I wondered if it could be a connector?
Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could try? Or is it time to throw in the towel??
Many Thanks

Hi Albagirl,
Well done for maintainence so far,
There is normally only two problems that create the dead screen.
1: The Graphics card or onboard GPU overheated.
2: The screen itself.
If the machine is showing nothing at boot then reinstalling the OS will not help.
Sometimes the drivers get corrupt but only in a working enviroment.
If you are in london I have a complete screen that could be tried if that helps.
Otherwise I guess it is time for the machine to be terminated.
It is a shame that machines of today are not restricted from 'self termination'.!
Given your level of discussion, I guess there is no need to tell you how to recover any data from the drive if the machine is finaled.
Best of luck.

Hi HV,
Many Thanks for your reply; you certainly seem to be the oracle on these machines!
I don't think the screen is the problem; but thanks for the offer of trying yours'.
I'm not sure if it's worth trying to replace the cpu or gpu?? I reused the thermal compound on the cpu last time, which I know wasn't very bright; so I'll try with a silver thermal paste & if that doesn't work, then I think I'll try & bake the motherboard (nothing ventured......).
I have absolutely no previous interest or knowledge of computers (till I got this HP), so would love advice on how to recover data from the hard drive. I've also wondered if it's worth getting another hard drive?
Think I'm spending too much time on this machine, but I just really like the set up. I've seen a 310 touchsmart working with warranty & I'm tempted to get this; do you know if this has the same issues and whether the parts are compatible with the 7 series?
Thanks again
Al

Hi Al,
Let's see if I can answer some of those.
The reusing of the cpu paste is not a good thing but as long as you have some on the surface it helps to transfer the heat to the metal, if you are rebuilding a working machine then always use new paste but for quick testing you should be ok with what you did.
CPU should be OK, I have never seen a dead one of those.
The GPU could have suffered overheating,
even if there is a Graphics card inserted the onboard GPU still does some of the work (I think)
or at least it has to be ok for the machine to boot !.
Changing the harddrive will not fix the machine on the information so far received.
Recovering your files from the Old drive is fairly simple.
If you do not have one then purchase a SATA to USB caddy or cable.
You will need the POWERED version with Mains adaptor for the supply volts.
Should be less than 10-20 quid.
Basically once you put the drive into a caddy you can then connect it via USB to any other machine and view/save/edit the contents. Normally personal files are in c:\users\YourName\. then you will see the desktop and documents folder. You may be prompted that you need to adjust permissions, this is fine for your purpose and just click OK, give it a moment to do it's thing and you should see the files.
The 700 range can work perfectly for the expected life of the machine but, because of the POOR design of the Cooling system, if they are not cleaned once or twice a year there is a fair chance it will overheat and have problems. This also applies to many other brands, both laptops and desktops.
Dust is a Killer, it collects and forms a blanket across the vents thus cutting off the airflow.
No Cool air and you know what happens !
Perhaps by now a small airflow sensor has been used along with the normal thermal sensors on newer computers to try and detect a problem before it becomes terminal.
Re baking the board, I have heard of people popping them in the oven.!
PUT BOARD IN COOL OVEN.
Raise the Temp to 210c and once reached Turn off the oven and open the door,
10 Seconds cooking @210-220c should do it.
Give the board time to cool down before you move it again.
But make sure that it is well supported and nothing is touching any components or they may move during the process, and do not use a fan oven ! it may just blow everything around..
I Have scored out the above as I have never personally done it that way, but have read that some people have .
By the way, I only know about these machine because I purchased 10 or 15 off ebay and recycled/Repaired about 3/4 of them. ALL currently still running and working fine.
I guess I should not have said that or they will start popping off now.
Most of what I have typed is from personal experience, but some is just a damm good guess.!
If I missed anything ask again !
Hope that helps.

Oops missed one.
Mostly the Parts from the 700 range only fit the 700.
The Graphics card and Ram are about the only interchangable parts with other compatible machines.
I actually use a 300 myself, it has been perfect since repaired, I leave it on for weeks at a time and it has never missed a beat..
I also had a 600 unit, now sold,
and that is also working fine 2 and a half years after I pulled the sewing neddle from the vents.
One thing I have noticed since using a Touch screen,
I hardly ever touch it.!
but it is a nice additional input device I spose.
I think I will press the Post button with my finger to see if I remember how.

HURRAY...
THANK YOU Sooooo Much, Hv,
We're back up & running!!
Thanks to your conviction that it was the GPU, I reflowed again using a hotter gun & .............. we're back! I did blow something while heating & it's left a very faint line across the sceen, but I'm sure I can figure out what I've blown & replace it.
Do you know if it's possible to use any other graphics cards with these machines? I find it incredible that the card goes & then the onboard card also goes 3 mths later!!
Also, there's talk on here about adjusting the driver to prevent overheating or downloading a 'Riva-tuner' ; just wondered if you think that's something worth doing??
Thanks Again
Al x
