You need a special cable as it is not the normal 15pin type.

There's a number of problems that could be causing this issue. A bad video card, a bad monitor, lose internal connections, cable melt due to overheating, excessive voltage. The only way to really know is to open the system up or bring it to a repair shop. Depending on the problem, you may be able to work around this issue by attaching an external monitor to your laptop. If you attach an external monitor and are still getting the black screen, try removing the battery and running the laptop with your AC adapter. This worked for me. I suggest backing up all pertinent data as soon as possible. I have not tried installing the patch that someone on this board suggested, but will do so. I will post the outcome later.

The IQ770 is a desktop PC and not a laptop.!
Or do they use different model numbering in the US.

I have an HP Touchsmart IQ775 and I am experiencing same issue.Startup tp HP Logo screen and then it goes blank and has vertical grid lines.I have the diagnostics disk and it tells me video memory failure.I assume it is the video card but can find no info on line to support that from HP.I also found a video card at Impact also for $ 300.
From what I have read it looks like HP should own up to this issue and fix it but as always we are all out of warranty so it appears to be in our court,unless they get enough complaints and get a heart.
From what I see is the video card is removable but not an easy task.
I even took it top the Gek squad and the first thing they did was tell me it would be cheaper to buy a new computer.I just paid a large sum of money for this one less than 2 years

It is a fairly simple process to attempt a fix.
You just need a screwdriver or two and a bit of heat transfer compound to finish.
Have a look at the words I wrote about removing the card.

Hp is a piece of crap. I use to love hp but now I have owned so many hp and all of them had problems. Right now my hp touchsmart iq770 and hp pavillion zd8000 has major problem. Had my touchsmart less then a year and it broke down to the black death screen so i left it there for a year then it all of a sudden worked again then stopped. Hp should do something about this or they will lose costumer over this. They have already let me down so i will rather buy Sony or other brands beside hp. I am happy with my Macbook pro. Btw. my sister also got the touchsmart iq770 a week before mine and hers broke a little after mine.

If you are just wanting to have a moan then it may be best to start a new thread.
Seems a bit pointless to leave an unrelated comment in a thread that someone else started.
Much like busting into a conversation with little or nothing constructive to add.
