Yes. There is a line in jack on the 300 series TouchSmart PC
Item #3 is line in.

Unfortunately my computer looks nothing like the one pictured and although there is a jack in that position it is a microphone jack. Can it also be used as a line in & if so how? (I thought microphone jacks were mono and supplied a bias voltage)

I've attached links to the 320-1010a product specifications.
The 320 differs a bit from the 300 series, but there is a microphone jack as already answered. There is other information in the spec that you might find interesting too.
Please see the I/O Ports section of the product spec:

I just saw your reply about the line in vs the microphone jack.
Here are two links to the motherboard specs: not sure which motherboard came in your PC, but here they are. Take a look, but I don't believe I saw anything more than the mic jack.

Ok that is the same as my computer which means, I asume, (& back to my original question) there is no line in jack (ie no way to input an audio signal from say a turntable) only a headphone, microphone & line out (audio port)?

I think you're right, "there is no line in jack (ie no way to input an audio signal from say a turntable)." At least that's what I understood from the spec sheets. I did find information about third party microphone audio jack converters. Whether these would help or not, I don't know, but it might be worth finding out about.
