I tested nonbricked drive used for firmware update yesterday and seems that there is some problems.
Software used:
- SeaTools for Windows
- HDDScan
- SeagateDiscWizard
Problem description:
- SeaTools short and long DST tests fails
- HDDScan reported s.m.a.r.t. error code 197 Current Pending Sector Count
Solution:
- Created bootable CD-ROM for SeagateDiscWizard
- Low Level Formatted Drive ( will write zeros to disk ) with DiscWizard
After Low Level Formatting I rerun all tests without any errors.

I had my Seagate Barracuda drive fail with a BIOSHD-2, its still under warrenty so HP is sending a replacement. My question is, is the data on my old drive still there and can it be recovered?, specificaly can i recovery the data by hooking it up to my machine after installing the new drive and recovering windows. Will it be detecded and accessible just like an external drive? Or will i have to do something else to recover my data?
Thanks

In your case, you can recover your data, but you basically need to connect a terminal to your drive and enter some commands so that the drive resets the counter. You then can access the data, but you still need to apply the firmware so that fixes the bug.
You need to read and follow the links provided to you by doon from this url to get a better understanding of the procedure nessacary for recovering the drive.

Here's my version of this horror story:
I have the Slimline S3500t CTO with a core duo, 32 bit vista, and a 1TB seagate 7200.11 drive.
- my drive suffered the firmware bug and bricked
- seagate would not repair it as it is an OEM drive
- HP will send a replacement, but will not repair/reset the drive
- after lots of research I found out how to reset the firmware and unbrick the drive. Detailed instructions are here:
http://sites.google.com/site/seagatefix/
- I then contacted numerous data recovery businesses in the san francisco bay area. none of them were aware of this fix - they all wanted to do perform their standard, and very expensive, clean room data recovery.
- before embarking on the dangerous voyage of trying to build a custom cable and do the reset myself I looked on Craigslist as a last resort
- sure enough, I found an IT consultant that has built the cable and unbricked 7200.11s multiple times.
- yesterday he came to my office with his gear, including a UMPC for telneting into the drive firmware, and had my drive up and running in ten minutes!
- if any of you suffering from this firmware bug want to contact him, his name is Wayman and his email is daskinkaid at gmail dot com
-- I highly recommend him if you're in the bay area.
- now that my drive is back up and running I immediately tried to upgrade the firmware to HP26
- like others on this thread, I found that there is no BIOS setting as described in the firmware instructions
- HP are you listening? please provide us with a bios update or a proper firmware exe that works!

HP has updated information on their web site:
Preventing Non-System Disk Errors on Computers with Seagate Drives
Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

Mmmmm,
when you buy a car and the manufacture finds a significant fault , there is a 'voluntary' recall...customer is happy and no customer time is wasted.
please refer yourselves to the'seagate' site which makes it quite clear that 'end-users' should not! install firmware and goes sensibly into the reasons for this...
so why oh why are we being put in this position at all?!
