Until you find a permanent solution, you might want to put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensor.
I know that is a redneck solution, but it will stop the problem until you find the correct way.
Hope this helps.

Actually "Microsoft eHome Infrared Receiver" is also located under Universal Serial Bus Controllers". There you can disable it but the problem remains. Uninistalling it is a temporary fix until the next reboot when it reinstalls. (Not a problem for me but this is a issue for my neighbor who bought his machine after seeing mine and he couldn't deal with it at every reboot)
Ok I didn't look there, I would have thought that disabling it would be permanent until you decide to re-enable it. So you shouldn't have to uninstall the driver, just simply disable it - what you might want to also look at, I'm not in front of my touchsmart at the moment is run msconfig and take a look at the services that start or even anything that starts up and see if there is one that relates to the Infrared Receiver and disable that too. It might be something here that is re-enabling the driver after a reboot.
I'll check it out a little later...

WOWzers, that is a real issue for a lot of ppl, especially those that play some game called "Windower". I just googled it and found loads of frustrated users out there trying almost everything to disable it...
However, I think I stumbled across a good thread, sounds like a combination of ppl managed to figure it out.
http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/tech/67734-uninst
1) Disable automatic driver downloads:
- Start menu -> Right click Computer -> Properties -> Advanced System Settings (top left) -> Hardware -> Windows Update Drivers Settings -> Select "Never check for drivers when I connect a device." -> OK -> Apply -> OK
2) Turn off SSDP Discovery:
- Start menu -> Type in "services.msc" without quotes and press Enter -> Scroll to "SSDP Discovery" -> Right click and select Properties -> Change Startup Type to "Disabled" -> Apply -> OK
3) Uninstall ENE CIR Receiver:
- Start menu -> Right click Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Click the + beside Human Interface Devices -> Right click "ENE CIR Receiver" and select Uninstall -> MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE UNINSTALL SOFTWARE BOX ON THE PROMPT (this will take the Microsoft eHome Infrared Trasceiver with it) -> OK -> Let the uninstall take place -> Reboot the computer
4) Preventing installation of IR device drivers:
- Upon reboot you will receive a prompt asking you if you want to install the device drivers -> SELECT "NEVER FOR THIS DEVICE"
5) Turn ON SSDP Discovery:
- Follow directions from earlier and select "Manual" from the drop down menu (Startup Type) -> Apply -> OK
5) Play XI

Credit to Milton on BG Forums for the SSDP Discovery thing. Feel free to post these instructions in any thread regarding this issue. Enjoy!

Hi, my problem is the opposite of what you guys want to do... I want to make sure my IR receiver is working, because I have not been able to use the remote control and I am assuming the receiver is somehow disabled. Will reverting this procedure be a solution for my problem? My multimedia remote is working fine.
Machine: Pavilion Entertainment PC, dv2419us
Thanks for your help!
PD: I already contacted HP and tried a driver, but didn't work.
Mauricio.

Hey guys, I am pulling my hair out over this... An HP support tech pointed me to this forum. My problem is in the game "Oblivion". I should be able to open the developers menu in the game by pressing the tilde (~). The menu won't open. Every forum and discussion about that specific problem has said the same thing, I have to uninstall the infrared device driver. I followed the steps here one by one, but windows keeps reinstalling the device as soon as it reboots. I am not sure where to go from here except to take my laptop apart and physically remove the IR extender card (assuming its not built onto the MB).
If you can beleive this, the second support tech I talked to actually told me to reformat my PC to remove a driver that comes packaged in my windows restoration discs... HUH??

1. Go to Device Manager, uninstall Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver device or ene CIR Device, which ever is applicable to you.
2. Go to Start–>Search type in gpedit.msc
Browse to Local Computer Policy, select Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Device Installation-> Device Installation Restrictions.
3. Click on Prevent Installation of Devices not described by other policy settings and edit this option, set it on ENABLED.
4. Restart the computer, windows will not be able to install the Human Interface device drivers or for that matter it cannot install any of it’s standard drivers.
5. Go to Device Manager again and under Other Devices -> right click on the unknown device and Disable it.
This should prevent windows from installing drivers automatically for Microsoft eHome Infrared Transceiver.
6. Open gpedit.msc again and revert the change so you will be able to install any other drivers in the future.
