I wrote to HP and they just about said they won't be supporting drivers for any beta OS.

Hi,

That's very fair decision. Very costly for them to do that, better to spend money for the test labs and release the right products at the end.

Regards.

Re: Windows 8

It is really a shame that two large companies can be so shortsighted.  Windows 8 depends heavily on a touchscreen to function as designed, and HP makes one of the few desktop touchscreen machines available.  It would appear to me to be in their mutual interest to demonstrate that the concept works during the beta phase of software development.  Maybe I am missing something, perhaps the support guy isn't really kept up to date on what the software people are working on.

Not passing judgment on the companies.  I'm sure once RTM the updated drivers will be released and think the reps response re:Beta is fair.  I'm looking more for some creative individual to have a temporary work around for the driver issue for the 520.  The 610 apparently works and maybe the 400 series as well.

Re: Windows 8

I upgraded my TouchSmart 600 rather than doing a fresh install.  I have noticed an issue where it is extremely difficult to use gestures to open the charms bar on the right side of the screen or close apps with the downward swipe motion because it is hard to get my finger far enough int he corner of the screen.  My wife can do it sometimes if she gets her fingernail all the way in or under the edge of the screen.

I have tried to install the update for the display driver at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4007... to address an issue with the display response near the edges of the screen, but it won't install on Windows 8.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen something similar before I try a fresh install to try and solve this issue.

Re: Windows 8

Bummer.  I reinstalled Windows 7, the touchscreen drivers, and then upgraded to Windows 8.  Didn't help at all.  Same issues, touchscreen non-functional in additon to an SM Bus Driver and a PCI Driver which I have no idea how to fix.

Re: Windows 8

Is yours completely non-functional or just really hard to use?  For mine, the screen works fine, but the borders are covered by the plastic cover.  It's like I need to adjust the horizontal and vertical on the screen.

no your not missing anything. i had the exact same thought as you. it just comes down to HP being cheap and not wanting to develop drivers but i guess thats what you get when you a buy a HP computer. the only reason i installed windows 8 was to see how they incorporated the touch screen into windows. thankfully i installed it on a .vhd so i can just delete it. i figured that microsoft would have convinced all the big pc manufactures to develop touch screen drivers and have them ready to go on windows update. the only driver i really cared about was the touch screen and thats the only thing that doesnt work on my touchsmart 320. HP can try to hide behind this 'we dont support beta software' and the HP fan boys can keep saying 'its not their fault that microsoft released new software and their product doesnt work' but thats a joke and there is NO REASON they cant release a beta driver or workaround to get the touch screens working. i guess nvidia and amd both released graphics drivers because of how competitive the graphics card market is. if one company released drivers and the other didnt their customers would be pissed.

Re: Windows 8

Rather than slamming HP or Microsoft while Windows 8 is still a BETA release, just be aware that no computer company guarantees hardware with unlimited future upgradability - even Apple had to eventually stop supporting OS X on non-INtel processors.  I have an iq770 which came with Vista and ran WIndows 7 just fine.  It installs and runs WIndows 8 but after attempting to run some apps, the system crashes and sends the report to Microsoft.  THIS IS HOW BETA TESTING WORKS.  For those who care, use your recovery disks for Vista/Windows 7 and go back to a nice, clean and functioning system...and stay out of the BETA game.  They'll get around to supporting the chipset if NVIDIA OR AMD agree to support the chipset...
