can't make a shadow image, I/0 device error with WD 3 TB external HD

I have a WD 3 TB external HD, I get  "request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" when trying to make a ghost image.  I formatted the External HD, was on the phone with WD support, but they don't help with shasow images.....help?
