cannot insert cd/dvd`s into drive,  all ejecting before insertion

How far in does the CD/DVD go before it can't go any further?

 

Was it ever able to accept CDs/DVDs or is this a new problem? 

 

Which direction is the CD's label pointing? In other words, if you're facing the computer screen when you put the CD/DVD in, the side with the label on it should be pointing towards you and the screen. You should be able to read the label as you place it in the DVD drive. The shiny side with the information on it should be pointing away from the screen.
