for the hp envy 20 users i have figured it out!!! lol.  so hit the windows key + x, and go to device manager.  under Human Interface Devices, there's just a list of  a bunch of HID-compliant devices with no specifics.  I just played guess and check, and it happened to be the 3rd one down the list.  Right-click, choose disable, and you should be golden.  if that doesn't work, you can play guess and check as well, just make sure to enable it again if it's not the right one.  good luck!

Lil_Liebe's solution worked for me! I came here to double check that disabling the touchscreen interface would only disable the touch feature and not the display altogether (it's an inconvenient time to have to connect an exernal monitor).  None of the other solutions I read applied to me, but this worked, and I'm happy!

FYI for other users, I'm running Windows 8.1 on a Touchsmart 15  (n044nr to be exact).

Also, for reasons I don't understand, I was not able to disable my mouse/touchpad in Device Manager (the disable button is greyed out).  Instead, I went back to the Control Panel, Mouse,  Device Settings, Disable.

I miss having a key (as on my former Dell Inspiron 17) to quickly enable/disable the touchpad  and  wish there was one for the touchscreen; either of these could have been a primary feature for my lonely F5 key.  If my external mouse dies, I'll be SOL until I buy a new one (with my Dell, I muddled through for 2 days until I could get to Best Buy).  It's a small price to pay to keep the cursor from flying around selecting things I don't mean to select.

I'm happy to hear you found a solution that worked for you, navgirl! Thanks for the kudos.

Btw, on some models you can disable/enable the touchpad by giving the upper left corner of the touchpad two quick taps. It's worth a try.

For me in Windows 7 it's "Control Panel" and then "Pen and Touch", so don't look for "HP TouchScreen Configuration" if you see "Pen and Touch" in the Control Panel as an option.

Once there, be sure to go into each tab.  By default, you're on the "pen" tab, but it's important to go to the "Touch" tab as well.
