HP Officejet 4500

Given a new printer for gift. Have to return do to manufacture flaw in ink chamber. Window still showing that printer is down loading.( after7hrs). Window will not close. How can I be assured that it is removed totally before buying another? Was used to a Canon office so difficult dealing with a small unit. Any suggestions for both ??.
