Printer will only print in color

I have an out of warranty HP Photosmart C7180 that won't print in black.  I have cleaned the printhead; changed the black in cartridges twice and have had three failed alignments.  According to my manual the print sensor must be the problem, but how can that be if I can print in color? 

 

I have tried the remedy of a thin wire into the two small ink receptacles and of course have turned the printer on and off and set back to factory defaults.

 

Any suggestions?
