A Microsoft engineer has confirmed there is a bug in the 64 bit version of the Deskjet 710 for both Vista and Windows 7. This also affects the 720, 810, 820 and 1000 series of HP Deskjet printers. The 32 bit version works properly. I do not know of any workaround for 64 bit Windows.

There is a recognized problem with the 64 bit driver for Windows 7 for quite a few HP printers (710, 712, etc.). Does anyone know when Hp is going to correct the problem? Most users cannot wait forever. There must be a timeline for a fix or a company directive that it will never be fixed! Does anyone know what the story is???

There is a patch that corrects the issue available here.

This solution worked for me the first time. But after removing the USB from the computer, and plugging it back again, my printer now doesn't work. It says the driver failed to install. The original cable for my HP 710C had the ones with the needles on it (the old version) so I recently bought an adaptor so that I can plug it on USB port on my new Windows 7 computer. As I've said, the solution here worked at first but now, my pc does not recognize the driver at all. What could be the problem? I'm running on Windows 7 32-bit. Hope you can help.

There are a few things to check. First, did the unit ever work with the new adapter? What driver does it say failed to install, the USB-parallel converter or the printer driver? Both are required for the printer to work when connected with a USB-parallel cable. Second, the patch indicated only applies to the 64 vit version of Windows 7. It is not necessary for the 32 bit and would cause problems if installed on a 32 bit system. If the patch was applied let me know and I can post information on how to "undo" this.

Nope, i did not install the patch for the 64-bit.
I have already printed once using this cable, about 2weeks ago. After printing, i unplugged the usb from the pc and i haven't tried printing until now.
I've mentioned earlier that it says, it failed to recognize the driver. But now that i have unplugged and plugged the usb cable again to my computer, it did not react anymore. It did not say whether it has recognized the usb cable or not. When i print the test page, the status is Error Printing.

I would love to find out some info on undoing this too. I have a Deskjet 712c (that I know uses the same driver as the 710c) that I applied the Windows 7 patch to and have been using perfectly for about a month now. This morning I started having problems that I haven't had before (showing error printing, getting stuck offline, etc). I tried everything, restarting the spool, the computer, etc, and finally decided to delete the printer and driver and reinstall. However, now my computer won't even recognize the USB cable when I unplug/plug it in and I can't do anything.
