Good news for you all! All you have to do for Windows 7 for the 3600n is to download the Vista 64bit driver. It works!

Found it. Goto Windows catalog and search for the driver (for quickness use this link)
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search
I found quite a few drivers for any situation for the 3600 but...the first and smallest I tried worked fine for my 3600n (network).
"Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003" worked fine for Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. I used this EVEN though there were windows 7 drivers listed.
ran printer install wizard and selected have driver (after extracting the contents of the download .cab file to another folder)
Very Easy....works very well....
It didn't work to have my printer wizard search the windows update catalog...

I just got off the phone with HP support and after many days I was finally able to get my Color Laserjet 3600n to work for Windows 7 (64bit). Since it was such a headache for me to get it done, I will take the time to tell you how I fixed it.
This is how I did it, since there is NO driver for WIndows 7, you have to dowload the driver for WIndows Vista
a) Went to the site below.
If this link does not work, go to www.hp.com and search for Color LaserJet 3600n, then click "Software & Driver Downloads". For Operating systems choose Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit).
Scroll down. . Click download next to HP Color LaserJet 3600 Host Based Driver
Important! Click Save. Save it on your desktop (to find it later). If window comes up again aftter saving it click RUN. At some point a window pops up and asks you if you want to unzip files, click Unzip. After its done click "Close".
b) Once its saved...
1. Go to Control Panel then 1.2 Devices and Printers then 1.3 Add a Printer, click next.
2. You get to choose a Printer Port (this step is crucial), on the drop down menu click on: DOT4_001(Generic IEEE 1284.4 Printing support). Click next.
3.on the Install Printer Driver window, since there is no 3600n driver, click on HAVE DISK.
4. A window will pop up which asks: "Copy manufacturers files from" and a drop down menu, click here and choose the driver you installed on your desktop and click OK. It should look something like this:
C:\CLJ3600 Driver
5. I am not sure if there are any next or Ok clicks afterwards but just go forward until it asks you to print test page.
All I can say is that when I heard my printer working I was very..very happy....hope this helps you too!
Dave

Thought I did everything in the order presented, but cannot find a dot4xxx port in any drop down. Can you elaborate?
Thanks!

Thank you so much ElDave! It worked!
I spent approx 3+ hours downloading and searching all websites related to this topic and had unzipped the file but just didn't know steps 3,4 &5. Glad to know I won't have to scrap such a big purchase.
Boy it sure would be nice if there was just a quick patch hp had out there. I have been an hp/compaq - and even Packard Bell (dating myself) consumer for many years - but this was rediculous. Not sure if I'll be so eager to purchase hp products anymore.
Just bought an HP desk top/monitor - you would think HP products would recognize their own!!!

Use original CD it worked for me.
I had a laptop with 64 bit Win 7, used all kind of tricks, then tried original cd, click on install and got it working.

3600n not working after installing SP1 on Windows 7 64 bit. Two machines. Also running JAVA 6 24. In the past I idendified a problem with with earlier JAVA, that documents would hang in the que if I had run a java application. JAVA 6 23 solved that problem.
Now this is worse. Documents hand in que regardless of whether or not JAVA has been started. Can access the printer for setup etc. Documents just hang in the que.
Use the VISTA 64 drivers with this.
Tried to call HP but the page with their phone numbers is a 404. (I now buy other brands - too much trouble with drivers from HP)
