Hello Daniel,
Thank you very much for the prompt answers - AND that came during the weekend! :-) Now down to the follow-up:
Ad.1:
Didnt work for me - the software reported (at the login screen) "Reader not detected". I guess that it went that way because W7U had already installed some authentec SW. I'm quite a newbie to W7 and didn't know of the "Biometric Devices" link in Control Panel.
I used that link and got it working: the login screen had three entries then, one for my normal login, one for the "Reader not detected" login (Digital Persona) and one for the Authentec package. Right after that I removed the Digital Persona SW and got rid of the "Reader not detected" while keeping the other two and fingerprint login functionality.
Ad.2: BINGO.
Ad.3: BINGO.
As for the video drivers, I'd like to keep my system as sleek as possible, and the Microsoft WHQL drivers work fine for me, since I don't use any games nor any grapics-hungry app.
KUDOS! :-)

Would SP48127 work for a NX9420 running W7U 64?

SP48127 doesn't work in NX9420, but SP48392 does.
Looks like it's the latest working version for that laptop.

For sure You've got installed in Your system from Windows Update fingerprint driver and Authentec TrueSuite software.
Have You checked below guide:

Daniel,
For sure you're one the best professionals I've seen at HP. I worked for this company for quite a bit of time - and your proactiveness is outstanding. I used to be fred.sousa@hp.com. And seeing someone as committed as I was by that time, working for the company, just refreshes me. If it depends on people like you, HP have a bright future.
Thanks a lot. You're one of the top of the crop.

Hi again Fred,
So You worked for HP?
I'm just a volunteer here.
Thank You very much for all Your kind words. It's nice to hear something like this from someone who was part of support too.

Hi,
1. Download Mobility Modder from here.
Extract this file with 7-zip(free) or WinRar and run ' MMDotNETSetup.exe ' file to install this aplication.
2. Go to AMD site here and download Full Software Suite - software and driver for your graphic card.
Note:
I know that this drivers are for Vista, but they will work in Windows 7.
Run Catalyst Software Suite file.
Installation window will show up with path where driver will be extracted (default path is C:\ATI\Support\[Current Version]).
Choose ' Install '. This will start extraction of all Catalyst files on Your HDD.
After some time you will see ' Welcome ' window. Select there ' Cancel '.
When you will see information: " Exit Catalyst Install Manager. " choose ' Yes ' to confirm your choice.
3. Run Mobility Modderand check ' Disable User Account Control (UAC) '.
You will need to reboot your system after this step.
Run again Mobility Modder.
Browse to the driver in C:\ATI\Support\10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc\ path and hit ' Modify ' button.
Wait until driver is modified.
4. Go to:
C:\ATI\Support\10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc \
and run ' Setup.exe ' file. Please note you might see a " Driver is not WHQL certified ", ignore this, as it is a side effect of the modification.
5. Wait until Install is finished and reboot.
Based on Hardware Heaven site (which is here) and my own experience with this model.

The fan of my NX9420 is running all the time at nearly full speed on Win7. Since the notebook is already 4 years old, the fan is making incredible noise that becomes more and more distracting. The problem does not occur with the same intensity on WinXPP. I tried some power saving settings but it didn't help.
Is there any possibility to prevent this? Or do I have to exchange the fan?
