Last week I decided to update my computer to Windows 7 x64 since my computer crashed. (It was pure dumb luck that I backed up my computer the night before.) Anyway, soon after I was done, I tried to install my HP PSC 500 (C6680A) and I was happy that It worked, however I soon realized that it lost it's ability to scan. I am not talking about the scan button that according to HP no longer works; I am talking about actual ability to scan from the computer.
Because my computer is telling me that I do not have a scanner connected and hp scanner drivers are missing from the list in the "Scanner and Camera Installation Wizard" and the printer is already installed, I believe I need a driver in order for my scanner to work.
If someone could post a 64bit driver (*.inf) for xp or vista, I can try to see if it will work it will work. (I don't think a 32bit won't work, but I don't know for sure.)

Sigh, I can't even make my HP PCS 500 print. I looked around for the deskjet 500 driver that HP says to use for Windows Vista 64-ultimate.
There's a 450 440c and a 5100 but 500 went poof. If you'd interally email me the link or post here.
I'm slightly irritated by the fact that HP has turned over responsibility for drivers to Microsoft. It feels to me like I'm watching a mother, giving a child a pitcher full of lemonade, patting her on the head, and telling her not to spill it.
In retrospect, it's more like a fanged aberration with tentacles than a child. But, fortunately, we're getting is sloshed with no real shattering sound this time around. I can't imagine it is that hard to make product - operating system - driver. We beta testers who nag for things that aren't out yet are merely a trickle that marks the explosive force of inaction.
That reminds me, Hi there random guy asking about this later.

Go to the printers folder, Add Printer, Local printer, LPT1, then when the selection comes up click on "Windows Update". This will load the updated list of available drivers. Be patient, it can take a few minutes. Once the list is updated you will find the HP PSC 500 listed under HP (not Hewlett-Packard) in the printers list. You can then cancel the isntallation and just plug in the USB cable to have the plug-n-play automatically install.

I have a PSC 500 that would not print in Windows 7.
First, I purchased a USB PRINTER IEEE-1284 Cable with C-Connector HPCN36 (PartNo 70613) from pccables.com. It was $19.95 + shipping + sales tax if you live in FL like I do.
I did what Bob Headrick suggests, but no luck. The driver could not be found. There seem to be two problems. (1) When you cancel the installation as Bob suggests, the driver is not loaded. (2) The printer is looking for a HEWLETT PACKARD PSC 500 driver, not an HP PSC 500 driver.
To solve the first problem, just follow the directions Bob provides, but continue installing the HP PSC 500 driver on the LPT1 port. The driver will load and you can get rid of this printer later.
To solve the second problem, click the start icon (lower left corner of screen in Windows 7). Click Control Panel. Click View Devices and Printers under Hardware and Sound. You should have a print device with a troubleshoot icon. This is the PSC 500 connected via the USB for which the driver could not be found. Please excuse me from this point because I completed these steps earlier and since my printer is now working, I have to give you the details from memory. Choose the troubleshoot option. Letting Windows automatically search for the driver does not work (see problem 2 above). You must manually select the driver. Choose HP and pick PSC 500. It will warn you that this may cause problems, etc. but fearlessly continue. Once you complete this and attempt to print, it works, or at least it did for me.
Hope this helps.

This is a follow up to my last post....
Printing is working, but now I'm wondering if I can get the scanner to work. Again, this is using Windows 7 Professional (64 bit).
In control panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers a device shows up that appears to be the scanner and it has a troubleshoot icon.
Properties > Hardware tab shows the device as a Lexmark X422 and the device status is: This device cannot start, (Code 10)
Here is the information on the properties of this device:
General:
Device Type: Imaging devices
Manufacturer: Lexmark
Location: Unknown
Device status: This device cannot start, (Code 10)
Driver:
Driver Provider: Lexmark International
Driver Date: 6/21/2006
Driver Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows
Driver Details:
C:\Program Files\Lexmark\X422\lxa1WIA.DDL
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ksthunk.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbscan.sys
C:\Windows\system32\lxa1comc.DDL
C:\Windows\system32\lxa1usb1.DDL
C:\Windows\system32\wiafbdrv.ddl
When I use the New Scan button in Windows Fax and Scan, I simply get and error box stating: No scanners were detected...
Anybody have any ideas?

How do I do this over a network? What is the name and location of the driver file on my hard drive?

Did you could solve your problem with Windows 7 and the HP PSC 500?
I have the same problem. My HP PSC 500 uses only parallel cable and it prints fine, but Windows 7 cannot see the scanner.
On the same computer I have also installed Windows Vista 64 Ultimate (dual-boot) and Windows Vista works perfectly well with the printer and the scanner, so it is not a hardware problem. The driver for Windows 7 seems to be faulty to me.
I have written to HP support and got several meaningless messages sending me to HP pages that I have already seen many times. No real solution or promise of a date for it, yet.

Can I ask if they want us to buy a new psc 500 every 2 years? Or are they happy with the customer base they have and hope that in the future there negligence will not affect us from purchasing a new HP PRODUCT?
This is ridicules that they can’t get there products to work on a windows system
