Solved! After looking through the other forums I happened upon this. Download this patch: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software10/COL30471/oj-75535-2/dot4patch_reboot.exe

I clicked run at the download, and you have to restart your computer for the patch to finish. The solution center appeared! Apparently there is some application of the patch that version 13 of the software does not have. I'm not at home right now to see if the solution center will connect with the printer but at least it runs!

Hope this works for you guys. And I have the printer showing in printers and devices.

Glad to hear you got it!

But, I believe that patch was for those running v12 and upgrading to win 7 ... I agree with you, they have a strange way of doing development, hopefully v14 will add the printer to devices and printers and keep existing functionality as well.

You're right, it was for those using version 12. However, I had used version 13 to install. Whatever the patch installed, it seems to also have fixed the problem for version 13. When I get home I'll see if the solution center is totally functional.

So my solution center is now fully functioning as it did with vista. It finds the printer and I can perform all of the functions. My guess is that when I had uninstalled version 12 software that some of the drivers or registry entries were not entirely deleted. Version 13 may not have entirely done an "overwrite" of the previous software but the patch applied the newer funcitons. That's only a guess. Whatever happened, it now works.

I applied the patch and then looked at v13, still working for me but I still have no printer in the printers and devices area.

When you retried, what steps did you take?

Some networked printers might not show a device in the Devices and Printers menu, but all features can be accessed by right clicking on your computer icon in Devices and Printers.

If all your printer functions are working and solution center has full functionality, you might try this document, which gives a step by step solution to accessing the print settings and detailed description of each option.

I've no problem with it not being listed in devices and printers if I have full functionality, I know that devices and printers is new to win 7.

I uninstalled all SW and reapplied the dot4 patch, then installed v13.

Have everything, but the icon in dev and prt's.

Mine is a wireless hookup, if Russ1 is local, then that could explain it, however if he is networked as well, it makes no sense to me how the same printer and OS produces differing results.

I'm aware of the right click in the dev menu for the system, I have no issues with seeing the print settings, etc.

I installed the patch after installing v13. It made no sense but after that the solution center worked. I then used the "add a printer" in printers and devices to add the 309 to my printer list there. The patch was listed for the 309g-n. I thought possibly the solution center software it contained may be a more up to date version than what is in the v.13 software.

Ok, no problem, was yours networked, or a local usb install?

If I add a printer at this time, I get two to choose from, obviously it sees the printer and the fax, if I add the printer, it will add as copy 1.

I'm leaving well enough alone for now, I have all the functionality, and I'm sure with V14 I'll get that icon back, then again maybe not, but I'll live ...

I added it as a wireless printer. When I use the solution center the wireless shows up as connected. The bluetooth printer shows as disconnected, which is an entirely different problem related to the bluetooth. I'm not tackling it at this time. Then I had also installed with the usb cable and it shows as copy 1. A version 14 would be nice but I'm not going to count on it. It seems like HP is constantly bringing out new models of printers. By the way, the 309 is listed in Consumer Reports as one of the best buys for printers.
